Author: sklivvz
Subject: 10114
Posted: 10 Nov 2018 at 12:48am

I am at my wits' end after a series of utter failures with ASRock motherboards. Basically the problem is the following. The setup worked for a long time, like six months. After that: black screen and code 52/three beeps. This was on a X299 Taichi.

Trying to fix that, I've replaced the motherboard first with a X299 Extreme 4. It worked for a day and then by itself, blank screen and 3 beeps at POST.

So I replaced the CPU. No help.

I tried all possible memory combinations (I had 4 banks) no change. I verified that they work on a different system as well.

I tried a different power supply (a Corsair 850 insteand of the 750 I have). I verified the power supply is fine.

I reset the BIOS.

To be clear this is on a minimal system with just PSU, motherboard, CPU and RAM, nothing else, no case, no GPU nothing.

Finally, I replaced the RAM. I got some corsair dominator platinum dimms which are explicitly marked as compatible with the X299 Extreme4 on the site.

Result: still 3 beeps.

I currently have 3 possible explanations:

<strike> the 24 pin power cable is defective, as it's the only thing I have not changed</strike> Nope, tried changing it and did not help

the motherboard has somehow stored some broken memory configuration that is not normally cleared with the CMOS

both motherboards got bad one after the other, by themselves, and broke the exact same way

All of these seem fairly unlikely. Other ideas? I'm leaning to return it to the shop and buy any other brand but ASRock

Edited by sklivvz - 10 Nov 2018 at 2:04am
