Author: Xaltar
Subject: 10302
Posted: 04 Dec 2018 at 3:54pm

ASRock's Phantom Gaming Tuning app should tell you your temps. You could also try HW monitor or another 3rd party monitoring app but 3rd party apps often take a while to support newer boards properly and often give false readings until then.

If your temps are reading high and your heatsink on your VRMs is not as hot as it feels like it should be then you need to check to make sure the heatsink is making proper contact with the VRM section, it may be loose or tilted from shipping. Sometimes when shipping is overly rough it can compact the thermal pads and cause poor contact. If this is the case (the heatsink will feel very sloppy) you can either replace the thermal pads with fresh ones or RMA the board, generally there are no problems RMAing with issues like this.

If your temps are good and are not behind the shut downs then we need to look elsewhere. Anything sub 90c under load is fine on that board, 90c is hot but it shouldn't trigger a shutdown event. I think, note I am not 100% sure, but I think the thermal limit is around 100c for the VRM section. Generally, I take action when my temps in that region climb over 70c, 70c under heavy load shouldn't shorten component lifespans.

Let us know what you find.

Is there any way to measure the VRM temps ? I felt the heat sink during and it was barely warm.

What kind of cooling do you have around your VRM section and what temps are you hitting?

5ghz on an 8 core 16 thread CPU is hammering that VRM section hard. Bare in mind that ITX boards never have as good VRM design and cooling as a full sized ATX or even mATX board. It's the trade off you make for form factor I'm afraid. It needs to be kept cool, particularly with such a beastly CPU being overclocked.

    Author: momo77735
Subject: 10302
Posted: 03 Dec 2018 at 5:02am

I am currently running an i9 9900k and an ASRock z390 Phantom gaming itx board.

Most of the settings are on auto with the exception of XMP, All core and a cpu multiplier of 50.

I have this issue where under load the system just powers off and restarts. Not even a blue screen it just switches off.

In some instances the system will not turn back on even if I press the on button. Very rarely I get a blue screen with the message 'kmode_exception_not_handled'

This is my first Asrock board so I'm not sure if this is normal with a bad overclock. My previous boards would give me a blue screen or just fail aida/prime 95 as opposed to just switching off completely.

I have tried different voltage settings and tried setting current/power limits to the max.

I tried different power supplies and RAM so have ruled those out. Same thing happens with different BIOS versions 1.2, 1.29 & 1.3. I have a 240 water cooling set up and temps max to the mid 80's.

Any suggestions on what to do next ?
