This<br />has been the general rule since the early days, AFAIK you can get away with some<br />mixing and matching but why take the risk. Always go with the lowest common denominator,<br />in this case NVMe Gen4. When you are mirroring drives you don't want there to be<br />a bandwidth disparity, the system will default to the lower speed anyway. <br /><br />TLDR, there will be no benefit that will justify the risk and added cost of mixing<br />in NVMe gen 5 drives. <br />]]>

With a RAID-5 array, is there any advantage to mixing Gen4 and Gen5 drives, or should I just use 4 Gen4 drives? <br />3 storage and one parity. <br />]]>

    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="https://forum.asrock.com/member_profile.asp?PF=38058">NDRE28</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> 113380<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> 14 Nov 2025 at 2:18pm<br /><br />Hi! <br /><br /><br />I've been on a RAID-0 setup for a few years (3x Samsung 970 Pro 1TB). <br /><br />Recently, I've bought an Intel Optane P5800X 400GB SSD, as my boot drive. <br />I've deleted the RAID-0 array and I'm using my "regular" Samsung SSDs as separate partitions. <br />My PC is more snappy now.  <br /><br /><br />My recommendation is: <br />To buy a small, but very high end drive, as your boot drive (Intel Optane, or an SLC NAND based drive, like the Solidigm D7-P5810). <br />Then, to buy an 8TB drive, like the Samsung 9100 Pro / MZ-VAP8T0CW). <br />If you can afford such a setup, of course. <br /><br /><span style="font-size:10px"><br /><br />Edited by NDRE28 - 14 Nov 2025 at 2:19pm</span>]]>
