I was using an i5 in my old motherboard which only required the 8, should I be using all 12 for i7?

This could be one of 2 things:

1. The RAM is not compatible
2. The RAM controller (IMC) on the CPU is not working for some reason, dead CPU, dirt on contact pads, bent pins in motherboard socket, uneven mounting pressure.

Given you have tried 2 boards and another kit of RAM I would suspect the CPU. Check the underside of the CPU for any damage, thermal paste/debris etc and also check the socket for any bent pins. If both CPU and socket check out, RMA the CPU. There was a time when a dead CPU was exceedingly rare but sadly this is not so today. In my experience, code 55 happens most often when the CPU IMC is dead, often at random after a system has been running fine but sometimes even out of the box.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

My build is here:

i7-9700k (new)
Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200 MHz 2x8 GB (new)
Z390 Taichi (new)
GTX 1080 FTW
Corsair AX860 Power Supply

When I boot up I see 55 on the motherboard and the computer turns on and off every ~10 seconds. I've tried resetting the CMOS, going to single channel RAM, varying the position of the RAM, trying a different type of RAM (3000 MHz instead), and returning the motherboard to get another of the same type. Is there something obvious I'm missing or could the problem be a defective CPU?
