Author: Photon
Subject: 11965
Posted: 21 Jul 2019 at 6:11pm

Hello Community,

I have stumbled upon a weird problem. Not sure that it is related to the motherboard, but I try asking here nevertheless.

First of all, my hardware: Asrock B85M-HDS, i3 4160, Bequiet Straightpower E10 400W, Palit Jetstream GTX 670, 2x4GB of DDR3 1600MHz RAM.

The story is like this: My old video card, a GTX 560 Ti, started showing rubbish so I bought a "new" second-hand one, the GTX 670. However, it didn't send any signal. By some trial and error I figured out the following:

1. If I plug in my old video card (or any other video card), there is video output. More astonishingly, if afterwards I plug in the GTX 670, it also gives a signal.

2. If I take my PC from power (using the power supply switch), the GTX 670 fails to send a signal again. It won't send a signal until I plug in another video card and then plug back in the GTX 670.

3. A CMOS reset didn't help (jumper and also removing the battery).

4. It doesn't matter if the power is switched off while the card is plugged in or not. If I take the card out, switch off the power, switch back on the power and plug the card in again, it won't work until I plug in another card.

5. Taking the card out and plugging it back in without switching off the power (I know, one shouldn't do it but well...) doesn't lead to the problem. So only if the motherboard looses power the video card won't start.

Now I'm somewhat out of ideas why the new card needs a jump start and which component is the reason for it, the video card, the motherboard or the combination of both. Any ideas on how to solve this problem are highly appreciated!

Greetings,
Photon
