I surely would not go through the headache as suggested 2 posts above and install some "modified" BIOS from third party.
According to https://www.asrock.com/MB/Intel/Z97%20Anniversary/index.de.asp#BIOS the newest BIOS supports NVME, so you should be able indeed to boot from that samsung 970 NVME.
All you need is a "M.2 to PCIe 2.0 adapter", countless offers everywhere.

but I wouldn't mind. I got an NVME to boot from PCIE slot. The following thread is for z77 but maybe some of it applies to you. Check on Amazon and just pick a PCIE adapter for m.2. I think I got the YATENG but other people have had success with other ones as well.

I recently purchased a Samsung 970 EVO NVMe M.2 Hard Drive for my PC without doing nearly enough research into it. I have the Z97 Anniversary board with all 3 PCIe 2.0 and 2 PCI slots available but am having trouble finding an adapter for the EVO. Any advice/help would be appreciated.
