ok, I think I solved the problem
for anyone interested in the future.

the core i3 8100 only supports upto 2400mhz ram.

so even with a 2666mhz stick you cant use the xmp profile.

I guess that the xmp profile option in the bios completely disappears because of this (rather than the more logical greying out of the option)

I cannot find an option in the bios to enable an xmp profile for my ram.

how do I enable it please?

(I believe there should be an xmp profile select under dram timing. but theres nothing except auto - which only goes up to 2400mhz)

intel core i3 8100

crucial ballistic sport lt 2x4gb ddr4-2666mhz

bios version 4.20
