Author: Xaltar
Subject: 14093
Posted: 14 Apr 2020 at 3:39am

The number indicates the number of pins in the socket so yes, different number of
pins, different number of contacts on the CPU. Even when the socket has the same
number of pins, like gen 6/7 and gen 8/9, there are differences in the chipset that
make the older generation incompatible with the newer (both CPU and board).

When you are looking to upgrade a system's CPU the first thing you need to know
is the socket and chipset. With that information you can then find a compatibility
list, like the one ASRock_TSD linked. Having your board model makes that even
easier to find. Just go to your board's product page and check CPU compatibility.

The best you can get for your board is an i7 3770k. If you are using an i3 or
i5 it will be a significant performance uplift for you. The other alternative
is to upgrade board, RAM and CPU. Going with AMD's AM4 platform will give you
a lot of options.

For a tighter budget I would go with:

B450 motherboard (whichever is cheapest for you)
Ryzen 5 1600 (the "AF" model can be had for a great price)
8gb of DDR4 RAM, 2x4gb kit.

If you have a bit more to spend then I would go with

B450 board, making sure it is Ryzen 3000 ready
Ryzen 5 3600
16gb of DDR4 3200 or better, 2x8gb kit.

Otherwise, keep an eye on places like ebay for a used 3770k and you can install
that in your current board. Just be sure you have a compatible BIOS version.

It isn't like AMD where you retain the same socket over a lot more
generations.

I have the ASRock Z77 Extreme4 Socket LGA 1155 ATX Intel Motherboard I purchased in 2014-2015. What current Intel processors (at least 6th generation) can I replace? If there is a list available, let me know how I can get access to it. Thank you.
