I need help!

A friend of mine has a self made stationary pc.

It has been working well for a long time.
But then stuff began to happen..

First of all. The fan from the power box makes a bad noise. And it is impossible for me to open it.

Sometimes when I turn on the pc nothing happens.
I can hear and see the fans moving and im quiet sure the hdd is also running.
But there is no screen image, and the mouse/keyboard stop working..

Sometimes I can manage to start up in failsafe version.
Sometimes it allows me to run windows failsafe mode, Sometimes it stops at
CLASSPNP.SYS..

He tells me that nothing have been installed lately, neither software or hardware.

Can anyone point me to an idea about what is wrong ?

One could think it is the motherboard that shuts of ?
Maybe because the power box is not working well ?

I am a software guy, so when it comes to hardware I am pretty lost..
