Perhaps I wasn't doing things in the proper sequence- I don't use Windows 10 for much (on my laptop) other than basic usage so I'm not very familiar with it, though I studied the MS-DOS manuals as a child lol.

Anyway, I ended up using Diskpart to 'clean' the drive, went back to Disk Management and selected New Simple Volume to allow windows to find the D: drive to use as storage and back in business after some trial and error.

I'm guessing the UEFI still lists/sees? both drives as Boot drives (Both are listed as 'Windows Boot Manager') but I do have the NVME drive as Boot Option #1.

The computer is small, quick and quiet so I'm happy with it.
Author: niceguy
Subject: 17619
Posted: 28 Dec 2020 at 10:29am

Hi guys, sorry for the noobish question but I haven't built a desktop since 2009 (old OC'd intel e7500).

I just installed a samsung 970 nvme SSD and a samsung 860 evo SSD and installed a new copy of Windows 10 Home from the Microsoft USB stick.

Everything went perfectly smooth (shockingly)but I selected the wrong drive to install windows onto. I wanted the OS on the NVME drive.

But when the Windows install screen popped up asking which drive to use (drive 0 or drive 1) and after searching the manual and trying to search the internet, I couldn't find any specific info.

So I took a chance that the NVME slot would be drive 0 for the OS install but I was wrong. Windows was installed on the 860 EVO SATA SSD, which is connected to the SATA 3_1 spot.

It didn't help that both drives are identical sizes, and I probably should have removed the SATA drive to eliminate the issue I now have.

So 2 basic questions:

1. With 2 available drives, does Windows install by default to Drive 0?
2. How would I have found out this information without having to ask a forum haha? I looked through the ASRock manual several times but did not see any notes about the drive slot order (NVME and Sata 1-4)

I could leave the OS on the SATA drive so that I don't have to format it and reinstall windows all over again, but not sure I care to.

Thanks for any input you have!

Jeremy
