The names of the settings of this option are unfortunate, they should be Auto and Nidec/Stock Cooler.

Yes, this option affects both the CPU_FAN1 and CPU_FAN2 connectors.

But I have used both three pin and four pin fans on the CPU_FAN2 connector, and they worked fine, no speed problems, no triple POST.

These headers are said to detect a three or four pin fan, its a feature called Smart Fan Speed Control.

Is there a reason you feel the need to use the "4 Pin" setting, given what it does to your cold startup? I've tried both settings, with UEFI 3.00, and while it never causes the triple POST failure, if set to 4 Pin it breaks three pin fan speed control on the CPU_FAN2 connector. Three pin fans seem to run at full speed regardless of the CPU_FAN2 speed profile selected. That is actually better for Corsair pumps! Read on.

Ahh, Corsair, your instructions can be so terrible... "... connect the dual fan connector to any four pin fan header on the board..." The same for the three pin pump connector. No mention of speed adjustment for either the fans or pump.

I've used Corsair AIO coolers. The pumps are meant to run as full speed ALL THE TIME! How does that happen on most mother board fan headers that have fan speed control? Unless they are set to Full On?

The Power Fan header on this board can be used with the Corsair pump, no speed control, full power all the time.

I ran my Corsair pumps with a four pin molex to three pin fan adapter, a common extra included with fans.

I suggest trying either of the two ideas above for the pump, and see what happens.

Author: parsec
Subject: 2460
Posted: 17 Apr 2016 at 11:38am

Wow, those are some wild issues you have with UEFI 3.00! Sorry to hear that is the situation.

As you know (I think), I have a Z170 Extreme7+ myself, and just changed to 3.00 yesterday.

I can honestly say that I do not have any of the issues you described with either setting of the CPU Fan Type Setting, with UEFI 3.00 or 2.50. I was just in the UEFI earlier today, and I could swear the name of this option is CPU Fan Type Setting. I imagine we are talking about the same thing.

I just had the PSU switched off an unplugged, as I had the case of the Z170 Extreme7+ PC open to change a fan. So I started the PC with UEFI 3.00 and had turned off the PSU as you described. I do not experience anything like your "triple attempt to POST", or the PC going directly into the UEFI Main screen.

When this board/UEFI goes into the UEFI automatically during a startup that is NOT after a UEFI clear or UEFI update, that means the Boot Failure Guard feature has detected a number of failed POST attempts (default number is three), and assumes one or more options in the UEFI need to be adjusted. Your "triple attempt to POST" experience sure seems to be the Boot Failure Guard feature working as it should be.

Questions for you:

With UEFI 2.50, after the "triple attempt to POST" occurs, what would happen next? It seems the PC then booted, is that right?

UEFI 3.00 puts you into the UEFI apparently right away, after one POST failure. Our board now simply has an option called Boot Failure Guard Message, and we cannot set the number of attempts. The automatic count is three. I guess you are not seeing this message? Perhaps this option is Disabled?

How the triple POST attempt is related to the CPU Fan Type Setting is strange IMO. Are you using the stock Skylake cooler? I'm guessing that whatever CPU cooler you are using, with whatever CPU fan speed profile is in use, might not let the fan on the CPU_FAN1 header spin up? That is seen as an error, therefore you are put into the UEFI to fix this. Only thing I can think of.

But we may be able to figure your issue out now, if you give me some more hints by answering my questions please.

The Support 4K native HDD thing should be only related to HDDs that are of the "Advanced Format" type. This has nothing to do with SSDs, and there is nothing we can configure or do to use it or not. This is all dealt with at a low level of IO, that we cannot touch. It simply means HDDs that are 4K Native will work correctly with this board and UEFI update.

For HDDs in the past, the standard sector size was 512 bytes. A larger sector size of 4K more efficiently uses the space on a magnetic storage medium, HDDs. 4K Native means the HDD no longer uses the "512e" 4K sector type, a type of emulated 512 byte sectors.

SSDs do not have sectors in the way that HDDs do, but we still must look at SSDs as we do with HDDs, due to the NTFS file system that was created for HDDs, not SSDs. I await the first flash storage based file system in PC operating systems, but wait we probably will.
