Author: bgks
Subject: 24655
Posted: 20 Jun 2022 at 3:41pm

The NVMe-RAID is connected to a Downstream-Switchport for PCIe. If the NVMe-RAID-Drivers are known to Windows, but the RAID was not explicitely installed, an NVMe-Disk will be connected to an AMD-RAID Bottom Device connected to the Downstream-Switchport. Now, this disk is invisible to Windows since the Bottom device would be accessed through the RAID device, that is missing. This disk is also invisible to RAIDXpert since RAIDXpert would access it by a AMD-RAID Config Device next to it. The problematic Bottom Device remains active, blocking the access to the NVMe disk, no matter how the NVMe-RAID-mode-Switch is set in the UEFI.

Working NVMe-RAID
NVMe RAID mode: enabled

Downstream-Switchport
      |> AMD-RAID Controller [storport]
                    |> AMD-RAID Bottom Device
                                  |> NVMe_DISK
                                  |> AMD-RAID Config Device

Working NVMe
NVMe RAID mode: disabled

Downstream-Switchport
      |> Standard NVM Express Controller
                    |> NVMe_DISK

Invisible NVMe
NVMe RAID mode: disabled

Downstream-Switchport
      <strike>|> AMD-RAID Controller [storport]</strike>
                    |> AMD-RAID Bottom Device
                                  |> NVMe_DISK
                                  <strike>|> AMD-RAID Config Device</strike>

The Bottom device needs to be deinstalled manually.

Invisible NVMe
NVMe RAID mode: enabled

Downstream-Switchport
                    |> AMD-RAID Bottom Device
                                  |> NVMe_DISK

Restart into SAFEBOOT MINIMAL, remove the Bottom device and install the AMD-RAID drivers provided by download or the respective UEFI tool.

P.S. The init as a RIAD device whipes out all data and any disk connected to a RAID-Controller needs an init. This also concerns the use as a JBOD on a RAID-Controller, i.e. usage as an independent disk. Thus it's always a good idea to init any disk connected to the system, unless you're sure that you'd never change to RAID use.
