PSUs can cause all
manner of issues, some you would never expect a PSU could cause.

If your old GPU works in the motherboard it is highly unlikely the issue lies there.
The board will either work with all compatible GPUs or none of them, there is typically
no situation where one GPU works and another does not. There are some GPUs that
are incompatible with certain boards but these are almost exclusively older
workstation cards (like old Nvidia Quadro NVS cards) that don't play nice with
newer boards.

If the GPU is known good then the first culprit is always power, be it a bad PSU
or necessary power cables not being connected to the GPU properly/at all.

    Author: JFox
Subject: 24814
Posted: 08 Aug 2022 at 10:33pm

I installed a new graphics card and my ASRock X470 system failed to power on. Detach the power to the graphics card and the system powers on. Reattach the power and system fails to power on. I suspected the new graphics card but was able to install it in another system. Is there any chance that the X470 could be at fault? If not, my Antec 650 power supply may be the culprit even though it has never caused problems before and still works fine with my old graphics card.

System ASR 470 / 16GB RAM
AMD Ryzen 7 2700X
Sapphire Radeon R7 260X (old card)
Gigabyte Radeon RX 6500 XT (new card)
Antec Power 650W

One other oddity. Even though the RX 6500 XT installed in my old system and works with the generic Windows drivers, when I update the drivers the card produces only a black screen. Hmmmm... power supply or faulty graphics card?

Any thoughts? Thanks!
