Author: Gordon D
Subject: 25123
Posted: 24 Nov 2022 at 12:26pm

The Deskmini X300 comes with its own CPU cooler because the standard Wraith cooler that comes with Ryzens is too tall to fit. It annoyed me though because it has a small fan that has to spin faster and so is louder.

But it is possible to fit a Wraith into a Deskmini case.

The Wraith cooler has an outer decorative shroud that adds 2mm to the height. There are two screws that lock it in place. Once they are removed the shroud can be levered off. The Wraith fan is also spaced up 3mm from the heat sink. If you unscrew it you can cut off those spacers. Then re-attach it.

Reduced in height by 5mm it fits nicely, and is quieter because its a bigger heat sink and a bigger slower fan.

Beats me why they bother with the expense and cost added to the price of the Deskmini of a completely different heat sink and fan when they could have used Wraiths minus the shroud and with a slightly reduced height fan. And what would have made it even better would be reversing the fan direction so it blew out through the side of the case, rather than sucking air in. That would have kept the rest of the contents of the case cooler.
