Agree, this has not happened to me even with older systems than your 970 Extreme3.

Around here I do not see many Linux users, it may take time until an advanced or experienced dual-boot user with 970 Extreme3 can help you so I would recommend open an ASRock support ticket

Sorry for not responding to your post right away.
I tried doing what you say, unfortunately the problem always reappears.
I have tried disabling windows boot manager via live linux but every time I log into windows it reappears and clears the previous priorities.
I really don't know what it could be. I think it is a bug in the motherboard bios that was never fixed. Hi

I've never used a 970 Extreme3 or FX-6300 but I've done (not being an expert) a lot of dual-boot Windows/Linux configurations including Debian 11.

In many cases "fully investigate the issue" is more tedious and exhausting than finding the custom method that just works, I'll share my way of doing it and hope it helps you while waiting some reply of another 970 Extreme3 user:

1 - Both OSs must be installed on different drives formatted before install anything.

2 - Install Windows, create a system image on an external drive using Backup and Restore (Windows 7) in Control Panel. After that re-format the drive used to install Windows avoiding Debian installer recognize some partition.

3 - Install Debian on different drive used to install Windows.

4 - Restore the Windows system image created before on same drive that installed previously.

5 - Boot into Debian and run sudo update-grub and reboot.

6 - Choose in BIOS the default drive/OS priority.


Based in my experience both Windows and Debian (including Ubuntu) uses the boot partition of first installed OS although using 2 drives for each OSs, better separate each boot on each drive to avoid problems in BIOS Legacy or UEFI systems configured for Windows be "the only".

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum.
I have an old AMD configuration with the following components:
MB: 970 Extreme3 R2.0 (bios 2.60 last update)
CPU: FX-6300
RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance
GPU: GTX 1650

I set up the pc for a dualboot configuration:
Windows 10 / Debian 11
I installed GRUB as a bootmanager. If I access the linux partition from grub, nothing happens and everything runs smoothly. When I enter the windows partition and then shut down the system or reboot it changes the boot priority of the bios and automatically "Windows Boot Manager" is set as first in the list and GRUB is put second.
This has been happening to me for years but I have never been able to fully investigate the issue.
