Newbie & 1st build

I am having difficulty in understanding the basic memory installation diagram in the motherboard manual. Is Priority 1 thecorrect choice? I have never seen an open slot 1 in memory placements, in the past. This may become a long and arduous project for a technology challenged "old guy".
