You will want to use the black (non steel reinforced) slot for the SSD as it gets its PCIe lanes from the PCH not the CPU. This will allow x16 on the GPU and x4 for the SSD.

The specifications can be a bit confusing about the PCIe slots, as you know. What is possible is limited by the PCIe lanes provided by the Intel CPU used, and the Z270 Kaby Lake chipset. That system has some improvements over the previous Z170 Skylake chipset.

From the Z270 Taichi specifications:

4 x PCI Express 3.0 x16 Slots (PCIE2/PCIE3/PCIE4/PCIE5: single at x16 (PCIE2); dual at x8 (PCIE2) / x8 (PCIE4); triple at x8 (PCIE2) / x4 (PCIE4) / x4 (PCIE5). PCIE3: x4 mode )

It would be useful to know which PCIe x4 SSD you are using. Is it M.2 in an adapter card, or a PCIe slot AIC SSD like the Intel 750?

You can have a video card in the PCIE2 slot running at PCIe 3.0 x16, and a PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD in the PCIE3 slot running at PCIe 3.0 x4 at the same time.

This board also has three M.2 slots running at PCIe 3.0 x4, but shares resources with the Intel SATA III ports.
