Hi, yes I have tried every combination of RAM config, it simply wont work.
I installed the two separate modules in my two laptops and they work fine with that RAM.
I took the old RAM from those laptops and it worked in J4205, but then...

I have pretty much given up on the motherboard, it refuses to work with anything installed in the PCIe slot. I thought I had a faulty dual tuner card, so I used it as an excuse to upgrade to latest Hauppauge Quad tuner -  and guess what , it refuses to work with that too. What point is a motherboard HTPC if it won't get along with the tuner card... or anything!

This will be my first and last foray into ASROCK.

I am running this board fine with G.Skill F3-1866C10D-16GRSL (2x8GB)(http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-1866c10d-16grsl). The PSU is a 60W DC-DC board with external AC-DC adapter. So, I think your memory type is fine for this board. But you may need to check your memory sticks for any possible fault. If you check the QVL list of the G.SKILL memory specs in your first post, you won't find any ASRock products, or any J4205 processor PCs included:

None of the compatible PCs in the G.SKILL QVL list have a CPU/memory controller that is similar to the one in your board. So clearly that G.SKILL memory is not compatible.

With no memory in the board, it won't be able to POST and you get the three beep error. That is normal, you must have memory in the board or it won't work.

You found some memory that works, great! What kind is it?

RAM compatibility with can be a pain these days. You can try using the RAM that works and update your BIOS then test the new RAM again. If that doesn't work I would return the RAM and pick up a compatible kit.

Ok have some progress. Got my hands on a mobo speaker and additional RAM.

-With the new 2x8GB  f3-1866c11d-16grsl no POST.
-With no RAM, 3 long beeps, no POST.
-With spare RAM, POST and BIOS access.

Incompatible RAM?

Power surges can do weird things. A recent one in my area ruined the HDMI inputs on a nice TV (nice surge protection there Monster Cable, thanks!) but otherwise it still works. It also ruined a multiple input HDMI splitter box used with my PCs. That was with multiple surge protectors in line with the AC power. The PCs were unaffected, but that was luck.

A 400W PSU will be fine, that's a minimum capacity IMO for a quality PSU. If the PSU could be used with a good video card in the future, a 600W+ model would be a better choice.

Just don't buy a cheap PSU. The PSU is the heart of a PC, so quality must be a top priority. There are great fanless and semi-fanless (fan does not run below ~1/3 power draw) PSUs from Seasonic and others. They are built very well so they can operate without a fan or without a fan running constantly.

It's been running 4years or so non stop, so due for retirement. I also suspect it copped a power surge only just on the weekend, knocking out the entire neighborhood, the old media centre was doing some odd things but still carried on working ok, so I figured it couldn't be that damaged.

The first thing I would do is try another PSU, it is old (circa 2011) and may have developed bad rails. Even just sitting on a shelf unused PSUs degrade, caps can swell, moisture can corrode etc. I have even had a "new" PSU arrive DOA because it was stored improperly and had corroded internally.

Also make sure that the front panel header is not connected improperly, a HDD LED connected to the power pins could cause what you describe. Pull them all and see if the PSU being connected still causes the system to power up. Also make sure it is not connected to power when you attach the 24pin connector to the board, that can cause shorts/surges that can damage the board.

Hi, I am in the process of upgrading my media centre (from ASUS E35M1-I DELUXE)
I settled on the J4205 but am having no luck getting any response out of it.
I am very rusty when it comes to this stuff, its been years since building up a machine so i'm wondering if I have overlooked something obvious?

PSU - Old existing CoolMaster RS-460-PCAR-D3
Memory - http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-1866c11d-16grsl

As soon as I plug in the PSU it immediately fires up the PSU/Fan without prompting.
It does this with or without the Memory installed.
I get no display (HDMI or DVI) or LED activity on the Ethernet port, the only sign of life is the PSU fan.

Would appreciate any help on where to start!?
