Things I want to know:

1) Is external port 9 working right now (Asmedia controller) in superspeed mode.
2) current UEFI (bios) version
3) current related USB settings in UEFI
4) current ASMedia en Intel driver versions

You said you updated your UEFI. Did you always "load defaults" in UEFI after updating it ?
Does an other external USB3 storage device behave the same way, that it is connected to a high speed usb port instead of a superspeed port, while connected to an external USB3 port ?

PS: Don't get confused when you see in USBtreeview that interrnal ports from an USB3 controller shows Highspeed ports as wel Superspeeds ports, because normally when a Superspeed capable device is connected, it should automatically be assgined to a Superspeed internal port.

Hi Montoya,

I've tried to follow your instructions, step 1 first and then 2,3,4 but I ended up in same situation as before: some USB ports work as Superspeed and others as Highspeed....

strangely, I tried also a USB3 hub and while when it is connected to my notebook it is USB3 (as it is supposed to be), when I connect it to the Asrock MB port USB3 port, it starts working as USB2 !!

I don't understand why I'm having so much troubles...

can it be related to some Hardware defect ?

can it be related to BIOS version or settings ???

USB external ports 8,9,12,16,17 should all act as Superspeed ports, when an Superspeed capable device is inserted. In my system, above ports all work as Superspeed ports.

Things to test:

1) *general check*

- Connect your USB keyboard and mouse to the highspeed USB ports of the generic USB 2.1 hub (check in USBtreeview)
- Remove your USB storage device
- Run devicecleanup tool with ADMINISTRATOR rights (right mousebutton) and remove all devices listed
- Insert and test your USB storage device, with USBtreeview loaded, on external ports 8,9,12,16,17 to see if it now shows up as connected to Superspeed port
- Remember to Use "safely remove" (right mousebutton) in USBtreeview when removing your USB storage device and inserting it to another external port

If 1) doesn't work:

2) Update inf files from Asrock download page

- http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Fatal1ty%20Z170%20Gaming-ITXac/?cat=Download&os=Win1064
- Download and install http://asrock.pc.cdn.bitgravity.com/Drivers/Intel/INF/INF(v10.1.1.38).zip
- shutdown system
- Turn on system and proceed to 3)

3) *Asmedia controller check external port 9*

- Run devicecleanup tool with ADMINISTRATOR rights (right mousebutton) and remove all devices listed
- Uninstall the Asmedia 3.1 eXtensible hostcontroller from device manager
- Scan for new devices in device manager
- Update driver for the Asmedia 3.1 hostcontroller and let windows search on the internet for the new driver
- Run devicecleanup tool with ADMINISTRATOR rights (right mousebutton) and remove all devices listed
- Insert and test your USB storage device, with USBtreeview loaded, on external port 9 to see if it now shows up as connected to a Superspeed port

4) *Intel controller check external ports 8,12,16,17*

- Connect your USB keyboard and mouse with a USB hub to external port 9 from the asmedia hostcontroller
- Run devicecleanup tool with ADMINISTRATOR rights (right mousebutton) and remove all devices listed
- Uninstall the Intel 3.0 eXtensible hostcontroller from device manager
- Scan for new devices in device manager
- Update driver for the Intel 3.0 eXtensible hostcontroller and let windows search on the internet for the new driver
- Run devicecleanup tool with ADMINISTRATOR rights (right mousebutton) and remove all devices listed
- Insert and test your USB storage device, with USBtreeview loaded, on external ports 8,12,16,17 to see if it now shows up as connected to a Superspeed port
- Remember to Use "safely remove" (right mousebutton) in USBtreeview when removing your USB storage device and inserting it to another external port

Yesterday I tried first to clean devices with devicecleanup tool and this made the USB tree more simple

Please check if "Usbtreeview" reports your USB drive connected to a Superspeed USB port.
UsbTreeView can show a 'H' in the icon of the high-speed ports and an 'S' for the SuperSpeed ports.

I have tested a 16GB USB flashdrive on both USB controllers (Asmedia & Intel) and no difference in speed detected in the benchmarks between USB controllers :

I'll check as soon as possible with tools recommended by Montoya

After reloading default parameters from BIOS and disabling "allow system to turn off this device to save power" option on every possible device related to USB and more testing I figured out as follows:

No problems are detected at windows system level

The 3.1 USB (light blue color) seems to be NOT WORKING AT ALL (even if usb drive sticked in no sound and no detection of drive into windows)

I found ONE back port (dark blue) actually working at 3.0 speed, most or all of others still limited to 2.0 see different ports speed tests of SAME usb drive below

finally situation seems to be quite messy and unclear to me and I must say I'm disappointed, USB3.0 ports are supposed to be an easy and basic function in 2016's high-end motherboard

I noticed something very similar.

I have a USB pen drive that I tested out in every port. Some ports I would plug this into and get USB 3.0 speed every time. Other ports, it would always come up as USB 2.0. This was straight after a clean install of Windows 10.

I then realised if I pushed the drive in a bit quicker it would pick up as USB 3.0 on some of the ports. It was like it reads the USB 2.0 pins and once registers those, it just doesn't worry about trying USB 3.0.

Strangely, I had a separate USB 3.0 cable plugging into an external had drive - this one almost always seemed to register as USB 3.0, no matter what port. Maybe just because the HDD was turned on after plugging the cable in?

Some of the ports always work properly as USB 3.0, so I just use those ones for the devices I need USB 3.0 speeds.

Try this excellent tool from Uwe Sieber for USB hardware info inside your system:

Use this to examine to which USB host controller and hub/port you USB device is connected to.

Also you can use "Device Cleanup Tool" to remove non-present devices from the Windows device management :
http://www.uwe-sieber.de/misc_tools_e.html

And you can also look for hidden devices in device manager and uninstall the hidden ones related to your issue.

Let me know if you can solve your issue with above tools.
