Intel Optane will not be a plug and play situation for many users. It has very specific requirements that must be followed perfectly.

You will need to study this guide from Intel and follow the instructions exactly:

A quick overview of the requirements for using Optane:

Install the latest UEFI/BIOS version, for the X270 Taichi that is version 2.00. It contains the IRST 15.5 storage Option ROM that Intel just released.

Windows 10 only supports Optane.

You must install Windows in RAID mode, the full name shown for the SATA mode is, "Intel RST Premium and System Acceleration with Intel Optane Technology".

The IRST 15.5 driver version must be used, no other versions of IRST support Optane. The IRST 15.5 F6 driver should be installed during the Windows 10 installation. The IRST 15.5 Windows driver and utility package must be installed after the Windows 10 installation.

The Windows 10 installation must be a full UEFI booting installation. The error message you saw was caused because your Windows 10 installation was done in non-UEFI mode.

That means the CSM option must be set to Disabled. The Windows installation media entry in the Boot Order that is used must have the prefix, "UEFI:" for the installation media. That will cause the Windows 10/OS drive to be formatted as GPT, MBR formatting will not work.

Older video cards may not support UEFI booting, that must be checked with the video card manufacture. The Intel iGPU supports UEFI booting.

Once Windows 10 is installed for UEFI booting mode, and all the standard drivers are installed, then the M.2 Optane module can be installed in the board. Then from the IRST Windows utility, the OS drive can be Accelerated with that option in the IRST utility.

Studying the guide in the link above is essential if you are not familiar with a UEFI booting Windows installation, and all the requirements for using Optane as a system accelerator.

Yes.  You need to get the Intel Optane memory for it too.

Below are someone else comments and I got NVMe and ssd on my Z270 and Optane is useless?

Comments: This device is meant for people with HDD or slow sata 3 SSD's.
If you have a m.2 SSD like the 960 evo or something, this deveice WILL NOT improve your speeds.
It acts as a cache for your drives, and its a great deal faster than a regular HDD.
So if your main drive is a HDD (say 2x2TB raided) and your MOBO has a m.2 this will be a upgrade in speed AND let you keep your cheap and large storage capacity.

However if all you simply want is fast speed, this is NOT the device your looking for go with a m.2/pcie ssd.

Comments: Consumers should learn about technology before buying it. This product was never intended to replace SSD drives. It will enable mid-range PC's to experience faster boot and application load times. This technology has been used for a while in servers. Now intel brings it to the masses. Nice!

Maybe I need to correct us both


Intel's Optane relates to specific and high dollar Optane hardware. It is not simply a program to run.

The latest BIOS, 2.00, says it begins "Support Intel Optane Memory Technology."

I don't rightly know if that means Storage too.

But I'd be running 2.00 anyways.
