Whether this makes any real difference to you depends on how long you are planning to keep your current hardware and how high are your highest temperatures, but in theory it is indeed better to keep the computer on at all times (unless you care about how much electricity you waste by doing so). While there are different levels of sleep mode, the general idea is that the system would not consume any more power than it absolutely has to in order to be able to wake up quickly and let you resume your work from where you left off. This means that the temperature difference between sleep mode and actually shutting the computer down should not be that big, which in turn means that sleep mode probably won't extend the lifetime of your components by any meaningful amount.

The light on my headphones' remote stays on after shutdown. Also, if I click any button on my mouse after shutdown, the lights come on and stay on unless I detach the mouse. If I plug it back in, the lights won't come on - unless I click any of the buttons, that is. I've disabled fast boot and all sleep modes on my computer, so when it shuts down, it should actually shut down. I don't know if it's a Windows issue, a BIOS issue or an issue with the USB ports/headers themselves.
