Author: strangedaze
Subject: 67774
Posted: 25 Sep 2024 at 7:55am

Hi all,

I'm having a weird situation I'm hoping someone has some experience with. About a month ago I put together a new system based around the Z790 Steel Legend WiFi with a Core i7 13700K and a Samsung 990 Pro M.2 boot drive on M2_1. The OS is Windows 11 Pro. So far, all BIOS settings are at their default(s).

The problem I've seen twice now is that while idling and doing nothing, I've stuck my head into the room where the computer is and instead of seeing a blank screen (video off from inactivity), I've seen the BIOS screen up. When I look closer, I see that the BIOS is showing no boot drive information -- essentially the boot SSD has disappeared from the BIOS. A power-off restart solves the problem, with the system booting normally back into Windows.

Since I've only ever seen the aftermath of this, I have no idea what brought it on each time. I'm not seeing any evidence of a Windows update happening around the time of the issue developing, and I'm not seeing any issues with the system in "normal" use. I don't know whether to think the mobo is doing something, or maybe an intermittent issue with the Samsung 990? If anyone has anything to share, please let me know!
