Well of the 2 USB sockets on the front of the case, 1 works but the other doesn't. Both connected with the same plug onto the mobo.  I get an error saying " USB device not recognised. the last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and windows does not recognise it."

Now I know USB device (memory stick) is ok because it works in other slot and on other pc's.device.

In device manager under USB controllers, it's showing a yellow triangle for "Unknown USB device (device descriptor request failed)". Under properties, the status says  Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (code 43).

I have done the update driver option, no joy.

is it likely to be a driver issue? I'm going to reinstall W10 when my new SSD M2 arrives. This time using the supplied mobo driver CD rather than a few downloaded from the net (Asrock's for this mobo) to see if that makes a difference.

However, I have found out that the working USB on the front will also charge my phone. But the not working USB doesn't.  I would have thought even if a driver issue then it could still deliver power to charge. How else does it know something is plugged in if there was no power?  With the lack of charging I'm wondering if it could be faulty hardware- the socket/cable?

Ideas would be great.
