That sounds like perfectly horrible advice. The stuff dead mobo's are made of.

I would be far more inclined to try and improvise with the mounting hardware.
Some appropriate sized threaded rod, cut down and screwed into the mounting
holes. Secured with 4 wing nuts would provide the perfect "hard mount" solution.

Just be smart about applying equal and even pressure/tightness. DON'T overtighten.

It's been suggested to try and knock out the mobo material that is blocking the hole.

What are the chances that these holes are actually semi-cut and just "stuck"?

I don't want to try and knock them out thinking they're pre-cut in some way and crack the mobo

The air cooler I was using came with it's own mounting hardware and won't work for this application.

I am going to call performance-pcs tomorrow and talk to their tech department to see what they suggest.

But you bring up some good points, I'm not so much worried about the warranty on the water block, but my CPU not being cooled properly if it doesn't seat right.

Looks like they should have included a second set of differant mount screws for boards that already have back plates. I think your idea of cutting the the fine threads off is a good one but will void the warranty on that water block and if threads are different may not screw in properly. Have you checked the threads on the original cooler and see if they match the 2nd tier fatter threads ?
Do not drill the mount holes out !

I have an Extreme X99M & absolutely love it

But I was trying to install this custom Matrix waterblock:

And the feet don't seem to fit properly.

From the directions this waterblock should screw right in, but the screws have 2 levels of threads, one thinner than the 2nd tier - but the 1st tier seems like it is supposed to recess into the board so the 2nd tier & fatter threads can screw directly into the board

But the problem is there are no holes for the 1st tier to screw or slide into - there is motherboard where these holes should be

So what can be done?  I don't think it's a good idea to drill out the mobo so these can thread into it, instead I'm thinking of just clipping this thinner 1st tier off so the 2nd tier that's thicker can thread directly into it.

I should also note there is currently a 1/4" gap between the CPU & the bottom of the waterblock with this problem - clipping off the 1st tier would solve this problem it seems.

But I wanted to check here first before I did any modifications.




This backer piece comes with the kit, but according to the directions it should not be needed for the 2011-3:
