For X399 platform you'd want RAM sticks in multiple of 4, in order to utilize its quad-channel memory configuration. Dual-channel or other mixes will be highly sub-optimal performance-wise.

4x16GB would be ideal, as you'll have more room to grow later, esp. with newer CPU, which will have better IMC.

I can't really advise you on the exact brand or model for X399, as I haven't simply have this platform to play with. I see however, that AX4U300038G16-DRS are listed in the QVL as 2/4/8 slots compatible @ 2933MT/s. Thanks a lot for the clarification. Cleared a lot of doubts I had.

Question
OPTION I 4x16 = 64Gb

Do you think it will be fine if I get two sets of these

I honestly do not understand the difference between those two choices. And which one is a better option performance/ compatibility wise. 128gb would cost a fortune yes

and its very hard work to get it faster than 2666mhz

your options are

try to get the same 'batch' of matching 16gb sticks (eg 2 more) this can be found on the parts label of ram (serial numbers)

or return the 2x16gb and buy a 4x8gb kit

the quad channel would make a decent uplift

as i say running dual channel on a threadripper is a very rare and unusal system

I took a look at the manual a few times but it is not that clear for someone like me who has very little experience with these new systems so thanks you for helping me out here.

I will be using this computer for rendering 3D content or video production.

So lets see if I understood correctly. If I want to have 128 gb of ram but I cannot expend 2k on 128gb of ram and also if I want to buy 2x16gb sticks then I better but 4x16 intead so I can run in queadchannel. Correct? otherwise I will have to buy 4x8 so I have 32gb in total but I can run it in queadchannel, I am right?

well to answer the question first asked

2 sticks of ram go in a2 and b2

this is the slots on right of cpu looking down at the board 2nd away from cpu and 4th away from cpu

this is clearly shown in your user manual though i must say

(4 sticks would be a2/b2/c2/d2 )

now the second question

depending on what task your doing yes quad channel would increase performance quite significantly

and part 2 of second question

it would be very foolish and optimistic to expect to run two what would be very different ram sticks alongside these (and yes even though they were same brand and heatsink looks the same dont be fooled to the system the 8gb sticks would be very very different)

in fact it is very likely in the hypothetical future the same brand and type of ram may well actually have totatly different ram chips on the same looking sticks eg micron made chips rather than hynix

and once again would look very different to the system than the ones you have already

yes, I am only adding 2 sticks of 16 gb. The reason why I am buying this is to be able to upgrade to 128 at some point in the next few years without having to trough the other ram away.

yes I am very confused with the dual channel and quad channel. If I run in dual channel, am I going to notice the performance difference?
