Author: incans
Subject: 99994
Posted: 04 Mar 2025 at 5:06am

Operating System: EndeavourOS (Linux Arch based)
Kernel Version: 6.13.5-arch1-1 (64-bit)
Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 7700 8-Core 16-Thread
Memory: 32 GiB DDR5 6000MT/s
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT
Motherboard: ASRock B650 LiveMixer
BIOS: 3.16

I upgraded my PC with the B650 LiveMixer and R7 7700 just a few days ago.

Once I installed Linux I started experiencing problems with the machine issuing a continuous stream of system errors of the form

usb2-port2: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?

My initial assumption was that one of my USB peripheral devices had failed, but once I tracked the problem down I found it was actually on of the USB controller devices on the motherboard that was causing the error, specifically one of the "ASMedia ASM1074 High-Speed hub" chips. Linux was only able to enumerate 2 out of 4 ports on this hub.

This is not a minor error, it forces the Linux kernel into a continuous loop of re-enumerating the USB devices, which has a significant impact on performance, especially of the desktop environment (KDE in my case). Some operations can be 10, 20 or more TIMES slower while this issue is in effect.

After a lot of trial and error I was able to determine that on my specific motherboard-

1) The error was coming from a controller that had No devices attached
2) The controller with errors is the one that drives the top group of USB2.0 ports on the rear panel of the board
3) Temporarily, I can prevent the errors and get the hub chip to operate properly if I plug a USB device into one of the ports it controls (?!)

I use a USB matrix switch for pretty much all my desktop USB devices (keyboard, mouse etc.) so that i can switch between multiple machines, but the upshot of my temporary workaround is that I now have a substantial number of devices hanging off a single USB2.0 port, which is really not ideal.

I have found a few issues like this on the forum, including this one, with several comments from users seeing similar USB stability issues.

My question is do I have bad motherboard hardware that I need to return to the retailer for replacement, or this a recognised BIOS issue that ASRock are aware of and likely to issue a BIOS update for?
