I am trying to just use the on-board graphics processor and its DVI connection to my monitor. I get nothing but, a Dr. Diag d6. I do not have any other PCI graphics cards. Do I need one?

The "onboard" GPU actually resides on the CPU. If you have one of the Xeon line without an iGPU then that could well be your problem.
