Hi,
I'm getting the wrong size and speed for the memory modules that I'm trying to use with a PC that I'm building. Here are the specs of the parts I'm using: MoBo: ASRock x399 Fatal1ty X399 Professional Gaming BIOS Version: P3.80 Memory: Corsair DDR4 32GB (4x8 GB) 3200MHz 16-18-18-36 CMK32GX4M4B3200C16 version 4.32 The Modules are set in the channels B2, A2, D2, C2. CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX CPU-Z and HWinFo64 both report the correct size, 32GB, but with the wrong speed of 1033 MHz Quad-Channel Mode The BIOS and Windows show the wrong size and better speed but still wrong... 16GB with 2133 MHz with only the channels DDR4_A2 and DDR_B2 showing each a 8GB entry with DDR4-2133, but oddly the total memory does mention that the full Quadruple-Channel Memory Mode is active. I tried adjusting the XMP Setting and DRAM Profile manually in the BIOS in the OCC Tweaker menu in the UEFI, but when I click on it to change it from Auto, the only options that I see available are not the correct one, it reads "Kingston Hyper X Predator" and the XMP 2.0 profile 1 reads DDR4-3200 16-18-18-36 1.35V I tried setting only 1 bar and it boots normally but it only shows still the slower number. One thing that did seem strange is that if I set 2 bars only in the D2 and C2 channels I won't get the PC to boot correectly, I get some Dr.Debug error code, 16 I belive. I tried setting in those channels all the different bars but doesn't seem to change anything. I updated the bios, even though it was already set to the correct latest version (P3.80 although the date is not matching the one in the website for some reason) to see if that would work but it didn't change anything. On the ASRock website I do see that the exact version listed for those Corsair sticks is 4.31, but mine turned out to be 4.32 (I couldn't figure out a way to order the exact version requested by the site). Could that be a problem? I haven't tried reseting the CMOS, would that potentially help? After reading more articles about the CPU-Z values I realized the speed is matching what the BIOS is setting, since the 1033 MHz is actually 2133 MHz aparently.
The problems I still have is that only CPU-Z detects all 4 memory modules, the BIOS only detects 2, no matter what combination I do, I keep swapping them and get very random results. I have tried one by one setting them in A2 and doesn't seem to always work, setting only 1 doesn't let me boot into the bios unless I set it in A1 instead, then all of them work, but if I set 2 modules in A2 and B2 then it works properly. I tried to set manually in the BIOS (UEFI) overclock settings for the memory (the timing that CPU-Z recommends for this model), instead of the one that is automatically set when I select the XMP profile but that didn't change anything. I'm trying now to reset the CMOS and unscrewed a little bit the CPU fan to see if that helps, are there any other recommendations? If that fails I guess I'll have to remove the CPU completely to try to re-seat it, but wondering if I'm missing something obvious. |

Success! I was able to fix my issue with that last attempt!
Setting the CPU fan a bit looser with the combination of resetting the CMOS with the method of removing the battery (I was never able to find a CMOS jumper in the x399 Pro Gaming MoBo) initially didn't make any difference. At that point I removed again all memory modules and tried one by one on the A2 slot, making sure they would all work individually. Once that test worked, I added a second one in slot B2, and it did showed in the bios correctly a dual channel, and so on until all 4 were set back again and at that point the BIOS finally picked them all up, showing the full 32 GB and quad channel. Once I made sure the 4 were showing properly across every info panel (CPUZ, Windows Task Manager, the ASRock software, etc...) I went back to the BIOS (UEFI), to the overclock tab, selected the single option available in the XMP Profile Load setting, and this time I didn't selected the DRAM Profile that wasn't matching the Corsair brand. After saving and restarting I finally get the 3200 MHz speed showing correctly everywhere! |
