As a concerned citizen, I have just become  even more concerned.

I purchased  the Skylake g4400,  updated the bios and installed the E3 1245v6 Kaby Lake.  Installed Win 10 Pro and updated all drivers. Everything was ticking along nicely.   I bought a WD Black 4tb drive for archive storage for my SSD (1x Operating system and 2 x EVO 850  500g with a view to RAID1) 

There were a few abnormalities that I noticed.  The WD hard drive was constantly making thumping noises during idle.  I never did any stress tests, but the thumping noises was loud enough to become annoying. A friend checked the disc status report which did not show any issues at all.  Second observation was artefacts on the monitor when using the display port.  Using HDMI it was clean. 

I was running my computer connecting one NIC to a network and the other to my laptop.  I was using it as a server  for a database I have written and everything was fast and furiously awesome.  After only 4 days of use for only  5-6 hours a day,  it died.   The only sign of life is the green light on the MB.   The on switch was  not doing anything.   I waited 5 minutes and it did reboot for only a few seconds. then nothing for the next few days   later.

Changed the CPU back to the g4400 and still no post.  Tested the PSU (EVG 650 G3) by using the shorting attachment on the MB connection.  THe fans came on and the WD drive was thumping occasionally still.  Unplugged all drives and still nothing.   Will post this in a new thread to see if anyone might have any ideas.

As for the RAM, it was the  Kingston value RAM 2133 Mhz ecc udimm.

thanks for your quick reply. 

I already contacted asrock support, but having never received any answer from them in the past, i thought i'd try my luck in the forums as well. I hope they'll get back to me this time.

I'm pretty confused as to why my stick won't be run in ECC.

Hello Lynxphp,

I have similar RAM modules but not exactly the same model, Kingston ValueRAM KVR21E15D8K2/16I. On the start page of the BIOS as well as under "Advanced -> Memory Configuration -> ECC Feature" it tells me that ECC is supported and enabled. I suppose you also don't have the option to set "Advanced -> Memory Configuration -> ECC Support" (not "ECC Feature") to Enabled?

EDIT: Erm sorry, you already said that ECC support is enabled, my fault. Hm, maybe you should ask ASRock Rack support directly regarding this matter. I can only say that ECC works for me with similar modules.

Hi

I also have a c236 WSI with a G4560 running the BIOS 2.10 since yesterday. I have ECC RAM, but when going into the BIOS, I saw that my ram is run in non-ECC mode (in the BIOS under Advanced -> Memory -> ECC Feature: Disabled), eventhough it is ECC ram (Kingston ECC 8GB ValueRam KVR21E15D8/8) and should be supported by the motherboard (and the option in BIOS ECC Support is Enabled).

Any idea?

Do you have ECC ram? Does it run in ECC mode?

In case anyone is still interested, version 2.10 of the BIOS has now been released as promised. It's working great so far for me with a Kaby Lake Pentium G4560.

What I find a bit strange is that on the C236 WSI's support page the BIOS update is described as "Support Kabylake (E3-1200v6) CPU" and the CPU support list has not been updated yet at all. Obviously, it now supports more than only the mentioned Kaby Lake Xeon.

Hey Chrys

I was quite happy with my selection of 16g ram as recommended by Asrock for the C236 wsi.  Now, I appreciate that you have the 2400MHz ram that works in your system and you supply information that I am not not knowledgeable enough to understand without copious googling and verification from 3 sources as a minimum.  So I did that.

What I categorically do have knowledge about is finding bargains and the CT16G4XFD824A 16gb is for sale in Australia for AUD$115. That is like getting 2 for the price of one kind of bargain for me. This company does ship internationally and in the conversion would be less than US$100. Not sure if this is a mistake as prices vary wildly in my google searches.  An Ebay seller has them for US$619 and doesn't even ship to Australia and your link was for US$183.

I ordered and paid for 2 to max out the c236.  I'll find out soon enough if they honour the deal. 

This is also related to an earlier question about the Kaby Lake supporting 2400MHz ram and now that there is a beta bios whether that has instructions to run at the Kaby Lake specs.

Because of the late (or not) release of the BIOS update, i bought now an Asus P10S-I. Asus has just released the official BIOS update for Kaby Lake CPU support.

Yes, usually RAM is compatible to lower frequencies. Since the SPD contains all settings there is no need for any manual tweeking.

I completely understand. Motherboards aren't something you want to flash random ROMs to. If you're at all concerned, you should contact ASRock tech support and ask them for the Kaby Lake BIOS for the C236 WSI. I just posted this here for convenience since this thread kept popping up during my google searches. If you do talk to tech support, you can compare the hashes for us and confirm or deny that they're the same file
