just to chirp in
(and im sure these guys will have it fool proof for you later on)

but if your not using the raid as a boot drive then im certain you wont have to reinstall windows
i think parsec thought you had installed windows on the sata connectors and one of the two 2tb drives

Looks like I finally got it going... it seems the missing piece was needing to do the Windows AHCI to RAID hack.  So even though I was "installing" the chipset drivers and the RAIDXpert software... it wasn't. Apparently it needed Windows to install some drivers first, which is annoying because none of that is mentioned in manuals as far as I seen.  Thanks to everyone for their help.

visualsoul, great!  I know a lot more now - my true purpose here.
Thanks, datonyb, for your chirp.  I was thinking that was true but was afraid to say.
Now a question for all.  Why do you think the original unRAIDed disks must be GPT?  I do  not think so.   I do think that the created Logical Device must be GPT to be over 2TB but that is true of any device that Windows sees.  Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think disks straight from the factory should be able to be presented to RAIDXpert and used to create an LD.  Wardog, you should be able to use diskpart to do a clean on your two 3 TB disks and create a RAID from them.  When creating the RAID a special format is used by the RAID SW.  Please let me know where I am wrong.
Thanks and enjoy, John.

J, I'm gonna pop your bubble.

The need to be GPT , as MBR has a limit of ~2TB, remember?

J, as far as a special format, no.

Again remember, RAID is only a means to consolidate drives into an array, pick your flavor.

Now in the creation of an array by using special RAID configuration software, it, this sw, knowingly alters disks layout to match the level of RAID selected. Then the sw part is finished, and the RAID driver takes over after creation and during use.

But my big question is, why doesn't Windows see the disks as usable drives?  For instance, say I have three of those 2 TB drives, but I'm only going to RAID two of them... the third is still invisible (by invisible, I mean they don't even show up in Disk Management) to the system.  I haven't jumped into the RAIDXpert software as I'm at work, but I'm assuming I'll have to tell the software that the extra drive will just be a normal drive, unRAIDed.
