It came with bios 1.4 and booted fine with all 4 sticks, but memtest7 only showed 16g. So I flashed to 1.8 and it wouldn't but up with anything in either D1 or D2, but I was able to get it to work with 3 even at ddr4-3200 cas 14 and memtest stable overnight, now seeing 24g.

I flashed to 1.7 and now it boots up and the bios sees quadruple channel memory, but memtest still only sees 24g. I flashed with just two good sticks back to 1.8 and still the same state as before. It seems to be either a bad MOBO or bios. I can swap out sticks and any work fine on 6 of the slots, but none work in the d1 and d2 slots it seems.

Exact same issue I am having. With 1.7, works perfectly fine quad channel, DIMMs in A2/B2/C2/D2, but it does not show the correct amount of memory in OS. Flashing to 1.8 or above and it will not boot with anything in D1 or D2 slots.

Just curious:  with 4 sticks you should be installing them in A2, B2, C2, D2 according to the manual?  Just wondering why you're also attempting to use D1 and some of the other slots?

unstable or weird events

a quick google reveals as far as these sticks go , well they dont fly the flag very well for gskill lets just say

techpowerup tested them and found very bad overclocking potential even unstable at 3333mhz
allthough they did report they got them stable at 3200 16/16/16/16 BUT this was with a well proven intel system that the xmp was designed for

anyways back to your ram yes the kits in pairs are harder work than the quads

becuase alledgedly............ram kits are suposed to be matched, quite how much effort goes into matching them we'll never know

imagine your worst case scenario (and i mean worst case) one pack has sat on shelf for a month and is sent out to you with a pack fresh off the line  now 4 sticks at least will be a pretty bad match (compared to a quad kit)

anyways enough far fetched examples
lets try and see if there is a way to sort out what of the 8 sticks were supposed to be matched as a pair

first option would be to study the serial numbers and try to find a pattern or concurrent numbering would be nice

try and see if you can use that to match pairs for testing

and yes at some stage ,i will try and help you find settings for manual bios options

but credit for the settinhs will have to go to two guys named chew and 1usmus who are far more gurus than myself

i can just lead you to thier knowledge and help you adjust it for yourself

ive had confirmation today from 1usmus that his ryzen timing calculator will work for threadripper and he seems to be working for the option to set the tool automatically to adjust everything for threadripper

heres a link for a quick read

if so can you try and first find out the matching pairs ?  eg which ones came as paired up sticks

then try each pair in a set of channels

eg for example try a pair in a2 and b2
test for booting /test for xmp. then run a quick memtest
then select next pair and repeat this teps 3 times for each pair

see if that throws any unusual event with a pair

your ram is made with hynix m dies which have been a pain since amd launched ryzen

but they should be playing ball ok at stock settings

(you have been trying at 2133 stock and not 3200 xmp havnt you ? )

I ordered 8 sticks of quad channel but they were sent in packs of 2, so I'm not 100% sure these DIMMS are not Dual and I have no idea how to tell. Each DIMM does say the following on the sticker:

PC4-25600 16Gx2 DDR4-3200 CL 16-18-18-38 1.35v Intel XMP 2.0 Ready.

I am leaving everything in the BIOS at factory defaults, not trying to OC them at all yet. I'm wondering if I can override any settings in the BIOS to get them working.

Meanwhile, I will do as you've suggested and test them in pairs. Is there anything exactly that I should be looking for?

Sorry, my edit didn't seem to show up. I added in there that with v1.80, I tried the following (both before and after reverting back to v1.70 and reflashing as per daytonb's suggestion):

A1 / B1 / C1 / D1: Boot loop.
A2 / B2 / C2 / D2: Boot loop.

Since other users have gotten at least quad channel config working that would leave your memory as the most likely culprit otherwise there would have been more reports posted

Yet Quad channel seems to work perfectly fine in v1.70? I don't get it. I'm highly skeptical at this point that it is my memory considering the impact that BIOS versions seems to have on things.
