Hello,

I'm swapping out a Ryzen 7 7800X3D to a Ryzen 7 9800X3D. I was reading on some forums issues with BIOS and back flashing or something.

Is there anything special I have to do before taking out the 7800 and putting in the 9800 other than flashing BIOS to 3.x?

Do I have to change around any MB drivers?

Thanks!

You should be fine. 7800X3D and 9800X3D have the same IOD, so all the IO function will be the same.

In fact, all AM5 boards have flash-back type feature, so you can even flash the BIOS with unsupported CPU installed.

Hello!

The only things you should do are these:
1. Update the BIOS to the latest version (before installing the new CPU).
2. Reset the CMOS before installing the new CPU.
3. It's not mandatory, but I'd re-install the OS clean, after installing the new CPU.
(Otherwise, you can end up with unexpected errors & weird behaviours.
It happens rarely though).

Thanks everyone! I kept the 7800 in, flashed the BIOS to the latest (beta) version and swapped CPUs with no issue.

The only weird thing was an ASRock utility appeared upon boot up asking me if I wanted to update drivers.

NDRE28, I didn't reset CMOS or re-install windows. I might do that since this already is a pretty new install and won't lose much.

Thanks for the advise!

Hello again!

I am glad to hear that everything went well.

The "weird thing" with the ASRock utility, that you've mentioned, is installed by default on all new ASRock motherboards (on mine too), but if you dismiss it, it will stop popping up on your screen.
