About four or five times over the last month or so my Plex server has been offline when trying to connect to it. When I walk up to the server and turn on the monitor, the BIOS screen is up. It's not clear what the issue is, so I power cycle. The PC boots to BIOS and stays there. The only thing that seems to get it booting again is to open up the case, remove the SATA cable from the back of the SSD, and then plugging it back in. The PC then boots properly into the OS.

I've tried two different SATA cables and have been able to reproduce this.

Any other tips to diagnose before I go out and buy a new SSD?

So you are saying you go to use the server, which runs constantly apparently, and find yourself in the UEFI/BIOS UI? That could be caused by the loss of connection, either data or power, to the SSD. The SSD I assume is the OS drive in this PC?

If the OS drive is lost for whatever reason when the PC is running, which is causing a restart of the PC, the board will automatically start the UEFI UI so you can choose a boot device. That happens when the boot configuration you have set up does not allow the UEFI to select another boot device. That is a normal situation, since most of us do not have multiple bootable devices connected to the board.

Have you set the Drive Type option to Solid State Drive, if you click on its entry in the Storage Configuration screen?

Being able to get the SSD working by reconnecting the SATA data cable could indicate a bad cable, or a faulty data connector on the SSD. Since changing the SATA data cable twice did not seem to fix the problem, it could be the connector on the SSD itself.

I would also suspect the SATA power cable and power connection on the SSD. Removing and reconnecting the SATA data cable can also move the SATA power connection, which may temporarily fix the connection issue.

Personally, I find SATA data cables to be rather fragile. Meaning if they are disconnected and reconnected more than a few times, they can just fail. Flat or round cables, short or long, really no difference IMO. Do your SATA data and power cables have locking tabs on them, or are simply friction fit? Some SSDs do not have the ability to use the locking tab on that type of SATA cables. If the SATA data cable you tried were not new, they might be less than perfect too.

What model SSD are you using?

Also, list out the hardware by Make and Model that makes the box up, including the PSU and it's age.

Is anything showing up in the Windows logs that may provide an idea of whats happening there?

Critical errors that would drop you into the BIOS, IMHO and experience, would be power or ram related. That list of HW will be beneficial here for us to assist.

Duh, sorry. One more.

How long has the server been running trouble free with the current hardware it consists of?

When you find it in the BIOS, does (re-)making your personal changes in the BIOS and  then Save and Reboot get it up w/o you monkeying with the SSDs SATA cable?

Too, so long as you're talking the specific B85M and not one of the myriad 8 other models that begin with B85Mxxxxx, are you running the latest 2.60 BIOS
