I have an issue with a new build i tried putting together last night.

I installed everything, computer will post (red light on, no beeps) start only without GPU power attached. The minute I attach the GPU power I can't even power the system. Tried a different GPU, PSU and cables, PCI slots and same effect.

Any Ideas?

New Items:

Asrock X99 Extreme4 LGA 2011-3
Vengeance Series 32GB 4 x 8GB DDR4-2666 (PC4-21300)

So with the video card power cable attached, the system won't start at all, nothing, right? No fans spinning, nothing?

Otherwise without the video card power cable, you get fans spinning, and the board seems to be powered up?

I'm not sure I understand how far you get without the video card power cable connected. Do you get anything on the monitor? As if the video card is working with only power from the slot? If you've never gotten into the UEFI/BIOS yet, the option to activate the POST beep is disabled by default. Plus you must connect your own beep speaker.

If the video card is not operating (fan not spinning, etc) you really should not pass POST, since that is a video card failure. If POST did pass, you'd hear a single beep, but you know that might not be happening now.

What about the PC case, is that from your previous PC? If so, or even if not, any chance there is a mother board standoff on the case that should not be there? Different mother board sizes have different standoff locations, so a standoff in the wrong location could be shorting the board.

You know the video card(s) should be good, right?

Otherwise, the CPU socket looked fine, no bent pins?

It sounds like something is causing the PSU to not start when the video card power cable is connected. Sometimes it is possible to mix up the eight pin CPU power cable with an eight pin PCIe power cable, that can cause weird problems. Sorry, just covering all the standard stuff.

That is correct. Without the 8 pin attached the computer starts up, fans spinning, etc., however no video.

With it plugged in no power at all.

Check all the stand offs and they are in the proper location, doesn't appear to be any short. Case is new (Corsair 450D)

Went a bought a third PSU just to double check and still same problem.

However...

On one of the latests attempts (without the 8 pin connected to the GPU) sparks and smoke shot out of the 8 pin port on the GPU.

Now the card is fried and the rig still isn't working properly.

Wow, sorry to hear that!

While I don't understand the point of starting the PC without the power cable connected to the GPU, or if that is even appropriate to do, but without having that PC in front of me to look at, I can't figure out what's going on.

If you can, get the board replaced, although I cannot say that the board is the problem.

Yeah I am getting the motherboard replaced. Took it back into Microcenter and they said more then likely that's the problem.
