Hi,
Just wondering whether the BeQuiet Dark Pro 3 will have RAM/GPU clearance on the ASRock Extreme 4/3.1 x99 board? I'm also considering the Phanteks PH-TC14PE. Any other air coolers that would enable a large overclock without compromises? Thanks in advance!

Cooler clearance depends on quite a few factors. Most notably RAM dimensions, many coolers today will have issues with RAM clearance when the RAM uses large heatsinks or LED lights etc. I wouldn't imagine GPU clearance should be an issue as that would be exceedingly poor planning on the part of the cooler designers
![]() I would be very careful with large, heavy air coolers on Skylake systems. Some coolers have been known to cause CPU warping (the substrate of the CPU) due to the sheer weight and mounting pressure of the coolers. While very few coolers were found to cause this problem in a static system there have been significantly more that caused the issue due to improper handling of the PC itself (dropping, bumping etc). Always bare this in mind when choosing your cooling solution. If your PC is moved frequently or subject to bumping etc you may want to rule out heavier tower style coolers. If you do opt for a heavier tower cooler (they tend to perform well) then be sure to remove the cooler for transportation of the PC for example. The best way to determine clearance and any potential issues is to research the cooler itself, either by reviews or google image search. Most motherboards will have similar spacing between the socket and the RAM slots. The Phanteks cooler you listed looks like it may have clearance issues with RAM if a fan is mounted on the side of the RAM slots for example. [edit] I see you edited your post to clarify you are referring to an x99 platform, the info about Skylake CPU warping only applies to Socket 1151 systems for anyone else reading the thread

Ah, sorry, I meant to say that it's an x99 board (managed to pick up the board + 5820k processor for 380(before tax)). There seems to be less info out there for the x99 boards...
As you may be able to tell, this is my first build!

Below is linked the Dark Pro 3 Dimension Sheet in pdf format at the bequiet website
http://www.bequiet.com/volumes/PDM/_products/bk019/bk019_dim_en.pdf Using a rule, that should let you determine if your chosen DIMMs will have clearance. |

I use a Noctua NH-D14 SE 2011 CPU cooler with my ASRock X99 Extreme6/3.1 board, which is actually a tiny by wider (3mm) than the Dark Rock Pro3, and I have no problem with clearance and the first PCIe x16 slot. The two ASRock boards have an identical layout in that respect.
As Xaltar said, memory clearance depends upon the height of the memory heat sinks. But it also depends upon the design of the CPU cooler. If you look at the pictures in the Gallery section of this page: http://www.bequiet.com/en/cpucooler/482 Specifically the side view of the cooler, you can see the two cooling sections are offset differently from the CPU mounting point. As it turns out with my Noctua CPU cooler, it is the fan on the right side of the CPU cooler that might interfere with the height of the memory. If you mount this cooler so the section of the cooler that is closer to the CPU is on the right, that will keep the fan on the right side over hanging the memory less than if the cooler is mounted the other way. Another factor with the fan clearance is if the fan can be moved up a bit for that little extra clearance. You can do that with the Dark Rock Pro 3's fan mounting style. So unless you use very tall memory, you should have no problems. DDR4 memory does not run hot at all, so large heat sinks on the memory is unnecessary. |

Ok - thanks for the great replies here. I'm going to have a look over these diagrams and digest the info a bit... but hopefully I can pull that trigger whilst the dark pro is cheap.

Hello,
The Dark Pro 3 fits. I have already installed myself. Tipp! The Prolimatech Megahalems is ~10 ° better ![]() |
