Hello!
Specs: CPU: Intel Core i5-9400F RAM: Two 8gb sticks from a HP prebuilt PSU: Corsair CX600 GPU: Nvidia RTX 2060 Motherboard: ASRock Z390 Pro4 All the components have been tested in another system except the motherboard. I don't have another compatible CPU. If I don't have the RAM sticks in A1 and B1 the system seems to boot but doesn't post. The fans turn on and the GPU lights turn on. There is no display at all. I am plugged into the GPU and not the motherboard. After some time (>1min) the system turns off again. I have reseated the CPU, RAM and GPU. I have reconnected the 24-pin, CPU 8-pin and GPU PCI 8-pin connectors. Twice. I have tried a single stick of RAM in each slot at a time and all 2-stick combinations. Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated as I no longer have any ideas! Thank you a ton in advance! |

The "preferred slots" are A2 and B2. For testing/troubleshooting always install
your single stick in slot A2. You will want to check what BIOS version your board shipped with, the 9400F requires P4.00, if your BIOS version is earlier than that it would explain your issues. If you are on an older BIOS version your best option is to try and borrow/buy a cheap CPU that is supported on your current BIOS version and update. Then, you can return the CPU or just keep it as a troubleshooting tool. A Celeron 4900 would be a good option for this as it is supported on all BIOS versions for your board and shouldn't be too expensive. Check your CPU support list here: https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z390%20Pro4/index.asp#CPU Your BIOS version should be printed on a small sticker on the BIOS chip. The BIOS should be P4.70. But I got my hand on an internal speaker! The error code is three beeps and a long pause. After the pause it starts again.

According to ASRock's beep code chart 3 beeps means no memory installed. This means one of 4 things in your case: 1. Your RAM isn't being fully seated into the slots (always possible with a new board and tight slots) 2. Your RAM is completely incompatible (unlikely) 3. Your CPU has a dead IMC (integrated memory controller) and should be returned. 4. Your BIOS is not the version it should be to support the CPU I hope this helps. I figured it that it's a memory issue. But if I put a stick of RAM in B2 specifically, there is no beep or one short beep. Then the system seems to boot as normal but there is still no display. The caps lock and num lock lights on my keyboard light up. Then the system might shut down. The behavior doesn't seem very consistent.

Ouch, sounds like possibly a bad CPU (IMC and possibly also PCIe lanes). I can't
say for certain but if you are getting a different result using different slots then the IMC may have a dead channel (channel A). Just to rule out bad BIOS data, try the following: https://forum.asrock.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=630&title=how-to-clear-cmos-via-battery-removal Failing that, I would return the CPU (if still possible). Bad CPUs are sadly not anywhere near as rare as they used to be. Good luck. |

Fixed it! Reseated the CPU and RAM once more and plugged in the HDMI cable! I had accidentally removed it when reseating the GPU. Massive facepalm... Well, I'm glad there isn't a hardware problem.
