I hope this helps someone else figure out how to get RAID 0 (or RAID 1) NVMe drives running on this board (and likely other X399 boards) for Windows boot.

Follow all of the RAID Installation Manual instructions on ASRock's Support page for this board, with the following exceptions:

1. On Step 1C - Set SATA Controller Mode to AHCI (not RAID). If you see 3 AMD RAID Bottom Devices in the Load Drivers step, you'll never succeed.

2. On Step 1F - Set Boot -> CSM to UEFI Only unless you have a specific reason to not. This will force you to use the UEFI Windows Installation.

3. After entering Windows the first time after install/setup, install RAIDxPERT2 and verify the array is displayed properly. Then restart to BIOS (DO NOT RESTART TO WINDOWS) and change the SATA Controller Mode to RAID. If you do not do this, Windows will BSOD with an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE code and AMD has stated that all controllers must be in RAID mode to function.

Everything else in the manual is accurate, but without these steps you will never be able to install Windows as a boot drive OR once you do it'll BSOD. Hope this helps someone else trying to get this running.

Hi Winnah,

I think you may have solved my problem. I'll try it over the weekend.

I have tried following the manual to the letter but Windows won't recognize my NVMe array. I posted a query here but no one replied. I've tried all sorts of other options too. Nothing.

Regardless of whether it works for me, thanks for taking the time. How on Earth did you work out the solution? Looks to me like genius. How could they get the manual so wrong?

I did once get Windows to recognise my RAID 0 array but then Windows decided it couldn't find any suitable drives!

Did it ever work for you? I spent about 8 hours trying to get it to work, I just happened to get enough info out of AMD's RAID guide + ASRock's to figure out the combination and once I got through the Windows Install finally I just had to figure out how to solve the BSOD/corruption after first reboot. Haven't had any issues since.

I've been pondering something.

Would it be possible to create two arrays?

The first 120GB as a raid1 and the rest of the capacity as raid0?

I want to boot linux from the raid1 and use the raid0 as l2arc for a ZFS storage pool :)
