I have a EP2C602-4L/D16 MB. With 4x HD's the system boots fine.
They show as SATAII_MO_M1_M2_M3 in the startup bios settings.
If I connect any further HD's of any type (I tried brand new 3.5" HD, brand new 2.5" SSD, several existing HD's I have) to any SATAIII or SATAII motherboard socket, during linux startup, after some drives have been mounted, I get ' a start job is running for dev-sda.1 device' then fails to load any further than journalct -xb shows: 'dev-sda1.device has failed'
Any idea how to fix this?

If the drives are showing up in the UEFI and the system is booting the issue is most likely coming from the linux distro not liking the combination of controllers being used.
Have you tried connecting all the drives to the SATA2 ports or are you running RAID on your 4 existing drives? If not, connect all the drives to the SATA 2 ports, there are 8 of them all provided by the same intel controller. See if that gets you past the linux error. If you are using a RAID array then I am afraid I am not familiar enough with linux to be of much help.
