Hey there. Looking to get some help on my situation. I hope I'm at the correct place.

Just got done building a new computer with B550 Phantom Gaming 4/ac and Ryzen 5 5600GT. What I realized afterwards was that the mobo only has total of one HDMI output and I need two output for two monitor setup.

I had an old Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series (don't remember the exact model) laying around, so I thought I'd give it a go, but with no luck. I have two monitors hooked up; the main one to B550 and a second one to 5000. Here are the combination of results I get:

1. Set the BIOS to default to "internal" graphics and my main monitor works great with B550 HDMI. Can't get the second monitor to turn on, even though the 5000 is recognized in Device Manager.
2. Set the BIOS to default to "external" graphics and my second monitor that's hooked up to 5000 works, although I cannot get it to update the driver properly to get to optimal resolution.

So the question is,

It's hard to imagine, but is B550 Phantom Gaming 4/ac designed *not* to work alongside another graphics card? Or is it because my 5000 is too old to be compatible?

Getting an iGPU and dedicated GPU to work together can be tricky even with new
hardware. It becomes increasingly more difficult when the GPU is old. The 5000
series is well beyond support these days. You could probably get is working under
something like Linux pretty easily but you will have a hard time with modern windows.

Not only is your HD 5000 old but it's also a mobility variant which is even harder
to get drivers working for under windows 8 and newer.

You might want to look at picking up a newer dedicated GPU that has multiple
outputs and use that for both displays. Radeon RX 570/580s can be picked up very
cheaply on the used market these days as well as others of similar
performance/functionality. I wouldn't recommend anything much older as even the
RX 580 is close to the end of it's driver support life.

Thanks for detailed explanation. It helped me understand where I stood.

Cheers.
