I'm new to AMD Motherboards, but have been working with and on computers for decades. I recently acquired a used PC with a Fatal1ty X370 Gaming X motherboard and a Ryzen 7 1700X (Summit Ridge) CPU. It came with an OEM version of Windows 11 Pro installed. I'm looking for tips and suggestions on upgrading the CPU. Since the 1700X is not compliant with Windows 11, I'm planning to upgrade to a Ryzen 7 5700G (Cezanne) CPU. I've been doing my research here and elsewhere online and have found the following: - UEFI Lists the BIOS version for current 1700X CPU as P5.20 - https://www.asrock.com/support/cpu.asp?s=AM4&u=664" rel="nofollow - https://www.asrock.com/support/cpu.asp?s=AM4&u=664 shows a supported BIOS of 7.30 for the 5700G - https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/Fatal1ty%20X370%20Gaming%20X/index.asp#BIOS" rel="nofollow - https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/Fatal1ty%20X370%20Gaming%20X/index.asp#BIOS states 7.30 requires you to update to 7.00 first, but does not seem to indicate a need to update to any BIOS version between 5.20 and 7.00 first. It also lists a more recent 10.50 version which seems to have secure boot features Windows 11 might want. Based on other users reports on similar upgrades, my plan is to upgrade the BIOS to 7.00 first and test everything. If all goes well, upgrade to 7.30 and test. If all goes well and the Windows 11 PC Health Check shows me as fully compliant with Windows 11 Pro, I'll probably stop there. Does this sound like a solid plan? Any pitfalls I should be aware of? Should I consider going on to 10.50? Thanks in advance for any tips or feedback |

Yes, that looks right, 7.00 then update to the latest BIOS afterward. 10.50 updates security keys which have expired and are no longer supported on windows 11. So yes, you will need to update to 10.50 for full windows 11 support. You can go directly from 7.00 to 10.50. Make sure to reset the system to factory/system defaults in the BIOS before updating. I always do this then reboot the system before updating, it tends to help prevent bad flashes. Good luck and post back here if you have any issues. -------------

Xaltar, Thanks for the guidance and tips. I especially appreciated the one about returning BIOS to system defaults. I might have missed that even though Instant Flash did a pretty good job of pointing out the need to suspend bitlocker and turn off TPM - but it did not come right out and say return to system defaults. Anyway, I've upgraded to 7.00, then 7.30 (to be extra cautious). Windows 11 seems to be working fine and all my important applications are working. I think I have two choices now: 1. Install the new CPU, which should run under 7.30 and test everything. If all is good, I can just stay there or consider upgrading to 10.50 at some point. I understand the I might need 10.5 for full Windows 11 support. 2. Upgrade to 10.50, test that Windows 11 is OK, then swap the CPU and go from there. Looks like you'd recommend going straight to 10.50, then installing the new CPU, but I'd appreciate your thoughts now that I'm at this point. Thanks again. |

If the system is up and running with 7.30 I would go ahead and test the new CPU. If all is well and running to your satisfaction then stick with 7.30. My recommendation of going to 10.50 directly from 7.00 was just to save you time and unnecessary flashing. I tend to favor updating as little as possible. Flashes always have a small chance of going wrong and bricking the board. On newer boards with BIOS flashback this is no longer an issue but your board predates the feature. -------------

| Finally got around to installing the new 5700G CPU. So far, so good, and PC Health Check finally shows the system as fully Windows 11 compliant. I will update this thread if there are any other developments. Thanks. |
