Are LEDs on the motherbroard on by default and is there a way to disable them form the firmware? I'm using Linux, so I don't have access to Windows tools to control them.

Yes, LEDs are on rainbow out of the box. There is good lighting controls in the BIOS, including an "all off option", like 7 different colour modes, and full 255/255/255 colour selection. So you can have them all off, or on subtly, or on full rave mode, all without ever leaving the bios...
