Subject: [half solved] HDMI 2.0 with Z170 Gaming-ITX/ac

Hello,

I just built a computer around a Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming-ITX/ac in order to plug a Samsung UHD TV to its HDMI 2.0 output.
When used at full resolution (UHD @60 Hz with 4:4:4 chroma) I get some image flickering.

It happens every 30 seconds or so.
This doesn't happen at all with 4:2:0 chroma or lower refresh rates.

Things I have tried so far:
  • Updating Intel graphics drivers (on Windows 10)
  • Ubuntu
  • Updating the UEFI
  • Getting a new high speed HDMI cable

I still believe the cable is the main culprit but I'd like to be sure I'm not missing anything before buying yet another one.

I also have issue with hdmi2 and lost the picture for 1 second every 2 minutes or so. I tried with a 21Gbs high speed cable of 2 meter and it did not work, So its something wrong withe the MC2800 chip or Intel driver. Did you update the HDMI chip firmware? I did and now I get zero picture when running 60Hz deep color. Just as a test I connected my gaming rig using GTX 970 to my UHD LG TV and everything works perfect. So ones again I'm sure that there are something with the driver/firmware.

Sadly I had an even worse experience with the HDMI F/W update.
The update appeared to run OK powering down. On restart I noticed images within webpages were corrupted (even though I was using external GPU). I rebooted but the board would not then post. I had CPU fan running but no output on any video - so the board has been RMA after just 5 hours of use.

As this was to replace another that had arrived showing signs of being knocked about in its packaging (which I don't think adequate) I decided to switch (back) to another brand ITX.

No-one else is reporting this with the F/W update but I would still advise extreme caution before running it.

No I haven't tried the firmware update, I didn't realize there was one!

Requirements
  • HDMIFirmwareUpdate tool
  • Dual channel memory
  • Intel VGA driver (ver:15.40.5.1.64.4274) or later version

I have a single PC2400 module. Confused

I suggest that you buy one more memory so you will get better performance. I talk to Intel and they told me that this is important for performance. The flicker is probably bandwidth problem on the memory and your cable is ok. Do not update until you have tested the memory expansion.

I just received a firmware update for MC2800 - v1.36 from ASRock and now my system works. Finally after almost 4 weeks struggle! I do not know if this update was a fix for me only so I should not post it here. I will let ASRock now that it works so you will get a official update on the download page.

I went ahead and upgraded the firmware to v1.36.
I'm crossing fingers, it seems to do the trick...

I got a shorter cable too, no big deal, I'll return the other one.

As simply "adjusting' the chroma, I'm venturing it was your cable. Not the length, but quality of.

2M is not a problem for a quality cable. Hardly. Connector quality itself or the soldering to most likely.

Do not listen to those that say HDMI is HDMI. Those same people also profess it either works or it doesn't. That saying does NOT take into account inferior and cheaply made cables.

..... Wait....... Yes it does. As you've most likely just experienced. :)

So ASRock have released the firmware, Still the download page point to v1.24 but it's be changed to v1.36 now. Great that it works for you now. I still think that one more memory will help you with performance.

@wardog: Yes you are right about that the cable quality do have impact of the system performance. There are no standard yet that make sure that the cable will support 18gbs and this is the requirement for 4k60hz deep color. But cables marked with high speed should be okay. I have tested 3 high speed hdmi cables and all of them worked as it should. But there are no guarantees that it will work, Soon when 4k@60hz will be main stream there will be a standard for this and then we know what cables will have 18gbs guaranteed.

So, I spoke too fast, it's still happening. But less often and even more inconsistently than before. Confused

Which CPU do you use for your MB?

I have an i5 6500. The firmware upgrade is a clear improvement so it makes me doubt it is related to the memory bandwidth. (Which should be around 30GBps according to benchmarks...)

I don't want to spend $70 on a matching memory module if it gets fixed by a future upgrade. I'll try to see if I can get my memory exchanged for a 2 modules bundle.

Could you guys disable dual channel and try?

I only have 2x4GB so the test will be that I only have 4GB so the test will not really show the same setup that you have. The flicker is it only when playing video? I use k-lite codec pack for best utilization of the hardware. Could run a test on this?

I see no correlation between my usage and flickers or signal dropouts.

I haven't touched codec packs for years, MPC-HC has pretty much everything you need built-in.

Are you transcoding these files before viewing?

Codec have to do with everything and K-lite is part of MPC-HC so I also use MPC-HC. Still if you only have problem when running playback then its important which codec you use. If you have flicker just showing desktop then its related to the image driver but not the codec so this was my aim in my question. I hope you have DXVA2 as your video codec any way.

Yes it does happen on the desktop, while browsing, and so on. There's no pattern.

MPC-HC embeds LAV, which supports DXVA2 and QuickSync decoding out of the box, you don't need any codec packs for that.

Guys and gals, I'm outta my league here. I use an Asus HDP-R3 and my 34TB of movies are in ISO which is native to the HDP. Still, I'm only trying here to help. Take mercy on me.

On the FAQ page of MPC-HC is a couple of pointers for tearing and glitches.
Quote

Why am I seeing tearing in the video?

The video display is experiencing a synchronisation issue, try enabling V-Sync by pressing V. If you have more than one monitor connected make sure you extend the screen instead of duplicating it.

Why am I seeing strange glitches in the video?

Hardware acceleration is most likely not working correctly. Try going to Options ??Internal Filters, right-click the list on the right and click ?œDisable DXVA filters??and then reload the video (Ctrl+E or manually). If this does not solve your issue, and your video plays correctly in other video players then please make a bug report.

Again, I have no problem playing videos; it's clearly signal dropout and it happens anytime.

With the new firmware I can use my computer for an hour without flicker and then it suddenly starts.

I had a serious bug this week-end.
I lost HDMI audio after my computer went to sleep (common issue), and when I tried to turn it off and on again, I lost the signal entirely. Since Windows wouldn't display anything I tried to fix it by booting linux and faced the same issue when turning sound off and on. I ended up using another HDMI input that doesn't support HDMI 2.0 and it kinda solved itself.

It looks like the MegaChips firmware is still very buggy. Unhappy

yes

seems that way

they should stop marketing this board as having HDMI 2.0  or make a bigger announcement so it puts pressure on MegaChips saying their MCDP2800BB is faulty and they have to issue partial refunds to customers

Hmm, i actually never updated the firmware for the HDMI as it said i already have 1.36, but looking at their own PDF their picture displays the same thing.. look here on step 2: http://asrock.pc.cdn.bitgravity.com/TSD/TheGuildofsupporting4kx2k@60Hz.pdf

Should i update even though the tool tells me i have 1.36?

I don't think so, my board came with 1.24 I think and the utility updated me to 1.36 which is the latest on asrock's page for our board

if you board already came with 1.36 just means it's newer stock than when I bought my board

Questions for the owners of the Z170 Gaming-ITX/ac board.

Help me out here guys, where do you see in the specs support for HDMI 2.0?

Or is that inferred from the 4K x 2K (4096x2160) @ 60Hz spec for the HDMI2 output?

You are all aware that the HDMI1 output is rated for 4K x 2K (4096x2160) @ 24Hz / (3840x2160) @ 30Hz, not the same as the HDMI2 output?

For those with flickering on the TV image, have you tried disabling any of the C State CPU power saving options? Such as, not using Package C State support, and disabling C6 or C3?

You are aware that dual channel memory is required for support of 4K x 2K @60Hz?

Have you tried the Intel Graphics driver version 15.40.14.4352, that claims to fix flickering with Skylake processor graphics? Available here:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25620/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-10-15-40-6th-Gen-?v=t" rel="nofollow - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25620/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-10-15-40-6th-Gen-?v=t

There are also several Beta graphics drivers available from Intel. They may not directly address the flickering issue, I'm just giving you others to try. This is the latest one, there are links to two others on this page:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25848/Intel-Beta-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-10-15-40-" rel="nofollow - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25848/Intel-Beta-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-10-15-40-

I also found this driver, which seems to be the same version as the 4380 Beta driver, but is not labeled as a Beta. Confused  Here it is:

you typed all that up and posted different links but couldn't check that HDMI 1.4 is capped at 30Hz for 4K and only HDMI 2.0 can do 4K@60Hz?

yes, it's inferred from the 4k@60Hz support claimed on all marketing materials for this board, the manual and the spec listing on asrock's website

Also, as it is clearly stated  in the manual, I think all of us that are  complaining are aware that there is a difference in which port should be 2.0 enabled and that you have to use the correct one for 4K@60Hz

Asrock has just been too non-responsive on this issue that has been around for months.

Hey ocFTW, the BIOS version 2.10 seems to have fixed issues for me.

It just took ASRock 6 months to make the product work as advised...
