Hi all was wondering ever since I upgraded to a 3700x for my x470 Taichi my CPU temps while gaming will reach max up to about 73c. I think this is normal but while encoding using handbrake from say mp4 to mkv I noticed the temps reach up to 83c. I know ryzen 3000 runs hot but is this pretty normal? I have PBO disabled in the BIOS. My system specs with my cooler listed below.
Thanks

Makes sense yours will be cooler than mine with water cooling. I think it's normal based on many reporting similar results. I came across this from Noctua: https://noctua.at/en/why-is-my-ryzen-3000-processor-getting-so-hot-why-are-ryzen-3000-cpus-running-hotter-than-previous-generation-ryzen-cpus-with-the-same-tdp-rating-is-there-anything-wrong-with-my-cooler
I applied thermal paste correctly a pea size dot right in the middle, I guess I have nothing to worry about based on the response from Noctua :D

Hi @T1125P, the Noctua NH-U12S SE is so skinny, not worthy of the 3700x. Upgrade to big big cooler and your 3700x will show it's prowess.
I use 420x140x86 for 1700x, plus 420x140x28 for GPU, single loop them.

zen 2 arent suppose to have pea size dot in the middle you should do the threadripper type format since zen2 silicon arent in the middle

Hmm I was thinking about upgrading my cooler to a bigger Noctua but a bit lazy now to replace my older one lol. I thought the 3700x had only one cpu die and CPUs like the 3900x and 3950x have multiple cpu chiplets? That's why I used only one pea size dot of paste. I will monitor my temps and if I see it go over 85c while encoding then I will buy a new cooler, thanks all ??

1 or 2 die ryzen 3000 has a gap in the middle between the IO die and the actual cpu chiplet so yeah i dont think dot in the middle is the best way to do it

hahahaha, absolutely understand you man.....
because I was also lazy to add 2nd radiator.... thought about it like 1.5 years..... finally did it......, without buying extra hoses, I thought the old plus leftovers was enough...... but was soooo wrong........ tried so many placement and configurations ......... install takeout install takeout........ at the end they all fit barely, bent and ugly possibly twisting may be going to burst it's way off later....... so I got to buy extra connectors to let them turn 90 degrees or 45 degrees etc, new hoses too possibly and redo them again......
Whole thing took like 12 man working hours......should have been just 2 hours I think.....
Anyway, I'm not using thermal paste, I use Graphene Sheet 0.025mm thick vertical 15~20w/m.k, horizontal 1500~1800w/m.k

Hmm, I forgot about that I/O die oops :D I think I will buy a bigger air cooler from Noctua or Be Quiet and put 2 half size pea dots on the CPU instead of one ^)^ I'm using 2 120mm Corsair Fans: I'm not using thermal paste, I use Graphene Sheet 0.025mm thick vertical 15~20w/m.k, horizontal 1500~1800w/m.k
Close to 2500RPM they are great.

Hmm that is interesting I never thought about anything else except thermal paste. Does it cool better? I'm in the states but I can order that just will take some time :D

honestly, I'm not sure it cools better or not, saying yes is bias talking, saying no but I'm very satisfied with it, especially when removing CPU so clean no mess.
typical cheap paste 3w/m.k
standard paste 5~7w/m.k
good around 10w/m.k expensive
really good >12w/m.k crazy expensive
only costs US$10 for A4 size Graphene Sheet 0.025mm, I can use it for like 32 CPU install. As in for life.

Graphene Sheet is slightly less efficient than standard thermal paste but we are talking negligible variance here. It's thermal properties are technically better but the nature of the material means slightly poorer thermal contact between IHS, sheet and Heatsink. There has been a lot of testing done and the general consensus is that it works about as well as average low to medium grade thermal compound, certainly on par with pre-applied solutions.
What is works very well for is use cases where coolers/CPUs are changed frequently while not suffering any worth while cooling penalties. It is also very useful in systems than run 24/7 for long periods as it will not degrade and become less effective over time. Personally I really like it, what you lose in efficiency through the slightly less effective contact you more than make up for with convenience and longevity. I can see it being widely adopted on GPUs and prebuilt systems very soon. GPUs in particular are infamous for hardened thermal compound causing inefficient thermal dissipation.
Thanks for sharing cx5.

Have you thought about an AIO cooler? I use an EVGA CLC 240mm All-In-One RGB LED CPU Liquid Cooler on my 3800X. My temps never get past 60c. They idle around 35c. Not the best solution for a small case but if you have the room, it could be worth it.

I like to stick to air cooling, I know AIO liquid coolers can cool a bit more but they have a certain life then they stop working. Maybe 5yrs or a bit more. I might look into a bigger Noctua cooler and apply a few pea size dots instead of one big one :D
