Subject: A300, 3200G, Crucial P1 NVMe, AX200 does not work
Date Posted: 24 Apr 2020 at 8:44pm
Hi,

I have strange problems getting it all work together:
- A300, Ryzen 3 3200G
- Intel WLAN AX200 M.2 (AX200.NGWG.NV)
- Crucial P1 with latest Firmware (3D NAND, NVMe, PCIe, M.2)
- SanDisk SSD 1TB
- WIN10 64Bit (on P1)
- Bios V3.60

By powering up the system it hangs.
There's no way to get into the BIOS

But: when I change the connector the P1 is using e.g.
from upper side to bottom side, I can enter to the BIOS and boot my WIN10
And there are no errors inside Windows and the crucial Tool told me that everything is working fine and there are no P1 SMART issues recognized.

Putting it back to the initial upperside M.2 place nothing works.
Finally I noticed that it will also work when I remove the battery plug.

Is my configuration not supported
or is there a specific BIOS configuration required to use that crucial P1 ?

That P1 behavior is surprising. I would expect any BIOS POST error.
But nothing happens ... not even a bios 'beep' ... The systems hangs completely.

Any Ideas are really welcome

... several tests have figured out that also ...

- Every external plugable usb device swap results afterwards in a reboot issue.
- I had to wait with a longer power off/disconnect for a successful reboot
- It seems with a dosconnected battery i got less reboot issues

After removing that crucial P1 M.2 device everything seems to work fine again.

A look at the small Module Support List of "Ultra M.2_SSD (NGFF)" on
https://www.asrock.com/nettop/AMD/DeskMini%20A300%20Series/index.asp#Storage
makes clear that I can't use every common actual NVMe device on the market.

ASROCK Team: Please can you make an update here.
Could that "crucial P1" device be the boot issue to my Deskmini A300 ?
How can I prove that my A300 Device has no hardware issue ?

Any ideas to that behavior ?

a CMOS reset does also not help here

This looks like a faulty SSD. Or the wrong M2 slot. Not every NVMe is suitable for every port on the motherboard. But you can find this in the manual.
Sometimes it is also so, that if a NVMe is installed, some SATA port can not be used anymore .

To find errors I would suggest to install only the absolutely necessary. And only if this runs perfectly, install the rest.

HI,

thanks for your hints.

This issue appears also when I use the A300 board with the crucial P1 as single storage device and without the AX200 WLAN Module.

I would expect that I could never boot from my P1 if it would be faulty.

The problem exist only at boot time during bios post.
Coming over the bios post procedure means that the following boot process works like a charm.

In the manual I can't recognize any mix constraints for SATA SSD and PCIe SSD.
But that crucial P1 ist not listed in the support List. That makes me nervous

I can also not figure out that my P1 has restricted usage to M2_1 or M2_2

just got an IcyBox IB-1817M-C31.

My crucial P1 works well on the external USB-C on my A300
that should speed up to 640 MB/s (got only 390MB/s read)

So I think I have no faulty device

Hi,

I still want to clarify if
- my Deskmini A300 is faulty regarding M2_1/M2_2 slots
- my crucial P1 is not supported
- bios v3.60 has a bug

Any ideas especially from ASRock
instead of buying an official supported PCIe device

Batterie raus, CMOS gelöscht, RAM einzelnd probiert. Hab ich was vergessen?

good to know that I'm not the only one here with that problem ...

Hi,

ASRock support advises me to make a check with
- another A300 board
because they suspect a CPU issue regarding PCIe Lanes by the CPU (both M2 slots are provided here directly)

Sorry, but I don't have a second under my pillow ;-)

So if I really have a CPU issue, why does it sometimes work ?
(after CMOS reset or hardware swap and wait some time)

Every hardware check inside windows then works properly and the Device Manager doesn't show any issue then.

I think that must be a worse bios POST race condition
where everything freezed at bootup.
- no caps lock LED
- no reaction by signaling a bios enter by keyboard

CPU is working well in another system. (no ASRock A300)
RAM is working well in another system.
memtest86 shows no issues in another system.
Crucial P1 works well in another system and external via USB with my A300

I can say:
- CPU ok
- RAM ok
- P1 ok
- A300 ... hardware seems ok because sometimes I can boot and work

BUT ... is that A300 BIOS buggy ?
- How can I get more POST informations during boot ?
- Why does the BIOS freeze without any POST Code ?

An RMA does not help here as long as ASRock support can't reproduce my issue.

Hi,

ASRock asked me to get the latest Crucial P1 Firmware
due they could not reproduce my faults with Firmware "P3CR010"

The latest of mine is "P3CR013" Released July 23, 2019 on the crucial site.
https://www.crucial.com/support/ssd-support/p1-support

Does an A300 have a Bios ?
Why is there no POST output if a hardware detection of M1_1 or M1_2 stucks?

urrrgz understood.
i do not using windows -.-
i think i could using usb LIVE stick with only crucial-hdd inside for make some tests, but without firmware tools.
i bought a key for windows 7.... that i wanted to install on the crucial. but the problem of change hardware => windows activation/deactivation is high if that experiment is failing. (with times of many CMOS resets and open computer)
if i had an external nvme via usb-c, i would trying to install an OS, if I could boot and then try real M.2 slot. After try the crucial firmware tools for take a look or upgrade with luck... i do not know! just calculate with lil bit testings -.- 120euro bad **** testing-experiment.
I seen:
USB 3.1 M.2 PCIe NVMe Adapter - Akasi 60 Euro
ICY BOX Externes M.2 NVMe Carbon - 40 Euro
(for a try? i do not have much money!)

wtf i am doing here... hmmm?
I just wanted using a desktop/office computer with VMs. now i freaking up, because a **** harddisk!? o0 -.- and VM+USB+WIN+NVME(crucial) i will need an adapter hmppf.

i can not help, because missing hardware \o/

roadi,
did you find something about NVME Settings in BIOS?
Perhaps: set NVME Gen2 / Gen3 ?
I found nothing.

I also had this issue where the SSD was recognised at first, then after reboot, no longer and the bios wouldn't even come up. Removing the SSD and unplugging the PC sometimes would reset that state, but after reboot, it would always be the same problem.

Now I use an Intel 660p (SSDPEKNW512G8X1) and that works without issues. Ubuntu installation here.

Cheers,
David

asrock did not answered.
my merchant means, "perhaps a problem with CPU"?

Posted By: xecuter
Date Posted: 28 May 2020 at 12:01pm
I tried phoronox and stress-ng. no problems.
with USB stick i could by-passing the nvme boot load. until CMOS take over config and the a CMOS reset will need.

A friend said: your hardware is ok. if cpu is damaged, you couldnt bypassing.
So Asrock build a buggy firmware....

Now what?
Perhaps i buy an other 2nd nvme and than same problem?

If the original board was just with one nvme slot? it is never tested with two nvme ssds?

if you are having issues, open a ticket with the support center for ASRock, make sure to link to this and other threads regarding, this is a boot issue and others are also experiencing it.

my client sent his back to me monday due to no boot and the simple unplug/replug mentioned in the threads worked, but who knows how long it will last and when it will go tits up again

Thank you for answer.
I have an AsrockTicket.
They said with Crucial P1, no problem! <-- but they just use testing ONE NVME (+ Kingston DataTraveler 3.0 USB Device), without Intel 600P ! ;(
My Problem is:
P1 in M.2_1
660p in M.2_2
= black screen

Or i change M.2 Slots, is the same.

Sure the BIOS Bootloader in broken.

But someone must helping me, because I am fail because, I don have experience to explain this easily. Because#3 ^^ there is no Error-Code.

I said, that i send my Hardware via RMA for new ones and there is no Hardware-Problem.
I have this trouble since eastern!! ;(((

SSDPEKNW010T8X1 - Intel 660p
CT1000P1SSD8 - Crucial P1

And PLEASE do not cheat by bridge/bypassing with USB-Stick!

Asrock tested for me:
Crucial P1
with SSDPEKNW512G8 (not SSDPEKNW010T8X1)

seems working.
What is the different of this kinds of Intel 660p?

Both have got the controller:      Silicon Motion SM2263EN

I do not know, if they tried a reboot.

Hi, i have tested more and more... but I do not want it! ;((
Last time i installed Arch Linux - > Cinnamon etc.
Works.
But what is the Problem now?
Linux Mint! :o
A300 + Crucial P1 + Linux Mint => Reboot = Black Screen Error for BIOS ! :-o

Posted By: xecuter
Date Posted: 19 Jun 2020 at 12:27am
I was waiting for IcyBox Adapter + Windows 7 for check firmware. But in the Adapter this Crucial Software do not works.
In Win7 i could see the Firmware of Crucial. P3CR013

What i wanted to do? (I use Mint 19.x) I was waiting for Linux Mint 20 (beta). Than i will make a great NEW INSTALL. Alone. on the Crucial P1. Because 100% compatible! -.-

So, now just the P1 SSD is alone and Linux Mint 20 will installed. REBOOT
FREEZE on boot. EFI-BIOS can not open. Just a black screen!

:-o

I have seen this kind of problem never been before.

What can i do?

That was my first and my last device from ASRock.
Support is here not the main business.

I still believe that this behavior is kind a firmware problem.
and it's not in any case static reproduceable for everyone.

Let's asume that this board has no BIOS. Can we say then the CPU is broken?

Do you think this design would be a good solution for placing it this way to the market ?

Sorry guys, but that is really unc00l to move these issues away to other components. You are responsible for all these component's beeing useable in your board and that they will be correctly recognized at boot time. Otherwise no one would buy such crap.

Best way in this case is now to disasemble BOARD, CPU, RAM, Wifi and SSD and spend it mostly bidding on ebay

Hi,

just updated my A300 Bios to 3.70 but the problem is not solved.
Sometimes on reboot the system hangs and I can't enter the bios anymore.

Changing the P1 slot between top/bottom location on the board does not help.

So happy disconnecting board battery and clearing CMOS with jumper CLRCMOS1
for some seconds makes me work again.

My A300 System consists of
- WIN10 pro
- AMD Ryzen 3 3200G
- Crucial P1 M.2 2280 1TB with latest firmware (on compatibility list)
- SANDISK SSD PLUS 1TB (NOT on compatibility list)
- M.2 2230 WiFi+BT Module Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX200 160MHz (compatible ?)
- HyperX 16GB 2933MHz DDR4 CL17 (NOT on compatibility list)

HEY Crucial support, what's wrong with my system ?
What else can I do / any workaround ?

Hi,

last check:
- update BIOS to 3.70 Beta
- disconnect SANDISK SSD PLUS
- disconnect INTEL WiFi module
- change RAM from Slot 1-->2
- change CPU fan from connector 1-->2
--> only 16GB RAM and that Crucial P1 NVME
Reboot ...
... dead

- Power off ...
- CLRCMOS1 short for 5 seconds
Power on ... works

I can work with my WIN10
- CrucialP1(latest firmware) is OK

BUT on EVERY reboot my A300 hang's (no way to get into BIOS)
Also Keyboard NUM LOCK LED freezes

So I have todo an CLRMOS1 reset for every new session

Dear Roadi,
Thank you for the posting.

Today we took the Deskmini A300, BIOS P3.70 and SSD Crucial P1 to test, but didn't reproduce the issue.
In our lab, the system can boot into OS and BIOS setup normally.

For your system, we would like to provide some suggestions for you to verify.
1. Press "F9" under BIOS setup to load default setting to verify.
2. If possible, please use other SSD to cross test.

Thank you,

Best wishes,
ASRock TSD

Hi ASRock Team,

thanks for your reply.
I also checked out BIOS default's but that doesn't help.
And the nvme works proper in other systems.
