Hi all

I'm considering buying an x470 Taichi as it's had great reviews for productivity, and I'll be using it primarily to run Hyper V locally with a bunch of guests (I'm not a gamer so gamer-based specs like RGB don't interest me, and I already have a high bandwidth wifi card), but I have a couple of compat questions first please.

1. Can i install 4*32Gb 2400 sticks ie 128Gb on this board? The specs say max RAM is 64Gb but I've read anecdotal evidence saying it works. These are the sticks I have: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07V6KDGT5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

2. Is it compatible with a 3700x out of the box without a BIOS update? I know it'll work when updated but I don't have a lower spec A4 chip to do it with and it doesn't support USB Flashback as far as I can tell.

3. I'll be running two NVidia GT710 cards to drive six screens; presume this will be ok? I'm not SLI-ing, they're independent.

Yes that's the anecdotal evidence I referred to :) .. but it's the only post of its type I've seen so was wondering (hoping?) others had had success here too.

Thanks for coming back again on this, much appreciated.

I did look at the x570 options before I decided to go for the x470s. They are, generally, a lot more expensive than the x470s for performance and spec I simply don't need, but the main thing is that they all (except one, which is eye-wateringly expensive) have active cooling on the chipset. I am deliberately targeting a near-silent build (I have a BeQuiet 750W PSU and a NoFan CPU cooler rated at TPM 80; the x3700 is rated at TPM 65) and an x570 board with active cooling will completely ruin all that. Hence looking to ensure I can get an x470 board that'll work.

I know the x470 chipset CAN support 128Gb; I was looking at the MSI range initially (Gaming Pro/Plus Max; Pro Carbon etc) which all list 128Gb as official max RAM, and I know they all CAN support the x3700, but, initially at least, they needed a BIOS upgrade to do so; like I said I can't do that here as the Taichi doesn't support USB Flashback (unless someone can confirm otherwise...?)

The only other option I guess is to find a vendor who'll ensure they flash a board for me before they ship it..? But I was hoping now, about a year after initial release, they'd come with a BIOS that supports these two points out of the box ...?

Do you (or does anyone) have any thoughts (or ideally be able to confirm) here please?

The active cooling on X570 boards is manageable. If you don't install anything into PCIe and M.2 slots connected to the chipset (the lower ones), it won't heat to the point the fan needs to be spinning. Otherwise, you can set the fan to be running at lower speeds and only fully spin up when the temps are in the 80s C. Even a little airflow is much better than convection, and you won't hear the fan running at 30%.

Memory support mostly depends on CPUs these days due to the memory controllers being integrated into the CPUs instead of motherboard chipsets. I guess the 64GB quote for X470 boards is there because the boards were released with Ryzen 2000 generation that officially supported 64GB. Ryzen 3000 CPUs support 128GB.

Fantastic, many thanks for this extra info - I had no idea it was the chip compat for the RAM I should have been looking at, I've been looking at BIOS the entire time.

I found a company here in the UK called Scan (I've been using for years in fact) who offer to flash the Taichi for a tenner (check the Q&A section [URL=https://www.scan.co.uk/products/asrock-x470-taichi-amd-x470-s-am4-ddr4-sata3-dual-m2-2-way-sli-crossfire-gbe-ac-wifi-usb-31-gen2-apl]>>HERE<<[/URL]) so I bought one this morning - safe in the knowledge it'll be pre-flashed to support my 3700x, which in turn will support my 128Gb

i also use scan
they used to offer free flash when bought with a 3xxx cpu

but hey ho
to be fair theres a good chance now 450/470 boards are coming into uk retail chain already with ryzen 3000 bios
my wifes 450 came already flashed from asrock last month with 3000 bios

as a tip check your box the 470 comes in
if its got a ryzen 3000 ready sticker/label ask for the tenner back

I didn't buy the chip from them which probably explains why they didn't offer the flash FOC. That said, thanks for the heads up on the boards now shipping with an updated BIOS. I did actually call them before I ordered it (you can't order a flash online anyway) to ask this exact question - the Q&A question was posted nine months ago so I was asking if it was still relevant - and they confirmed that yes, they'll still need to flash it, so it'll be interesting to see if the packaging bears that out when I get it. Is there any way to check the flash date in the BIOS anywhere? Would be interesting to see what that is when I fire it up, eh? :)

i dont think its displaying anywhere the date of flash

allthough some smart ass can probably tell with an eprom reader

the likes of you and me probably cant

what you can do though is check the box for the ryzen 3000 print or sticker

AND
on the motherboard it should have the bios version on a sticker right on the actual bios chip

version 3.4 or higher is the ryzen 3000 on your board

in other words if sticker onboard is 3,4 or higher it didnt need flashing to 'boot' ryzen 3000 , whether 3.4 is anygood i dont know but if the board hasnt got version 3.9 in actual bios display then i would suggest they havnt flashed it 'for you' as this is the most recent as of the 4th feb

i know i sound a bit finicky but lets face it
youpay 300 quid for aboard the least they could do is flash the bloody bios for free ..............
