Subject: Updating Bios on X370 Killer SLI/AC

Hello Everyone,

I'm currently in the process of upgrading my build: (please see below)

AMD Ryzen 9 3900x 3.8 GHz 12-Core Processor

ASRock X370 Killer SLI/ac ATX AM4 (already using)

ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 2 TB M.2 SSD

Geforce RTX 2080S 8GB

I've done a little research and noted that, while this CPU is technically compatible with the Killer, it may require a BIOs update. I went ahead and downloaded the latest update to a formatted quick 16 GB flash drive, and unzipped the update, which was a .80 file. After accessing the bios, setting the settings to default, I attempted to start the update. The MB read the flash drive, but indicated to not find the image file.

I then tried the update from the internet feature, but indicated that there was no update needed. I just wanted to know... is this accurate? Understandably I don't want to go ahead and purchase the AMD upgrade if there's the potential of it not being compatible.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

try a smaller usb flash drive circa 2-4 gb

and a different usb slot (ideally connected to older usb2 and direct to board)

Had a Kingston 1 GB lying around and gave that a try. I attached it to the back of the motherboard but had no luck. The BIOS identifies the USB and for a split second reads the "X370KLI5.80" file, but still says it cannot find the image file.

aha i think ive sussed it

what current bios version ?

you HAVE to install version 3.50 A BRIDGE BIOS before anything higher

AND THEN V 5.10 before anything higher

im guessing your version 5.80 is locked out due to not having 5.10 or even worse not being on a bios above 3.5 yet

to clarify if you are on version 3.40 or lower you need to flash
3,5

then 5.10 and then 5,8

My BIOS version is 1.6 according to CMD prompt.

Followed the steps and added 3.5 bridge to the USB. Loaded defaults on BIOS but still is recognizing the USB and seeing the file... but still giving the "no image file detected" message.

I noticed there are a couple versions before 3.5... it may be a pain, but I could try going from 2.40 (the start of the updates) and onward until I reach 3.5?

Update: It's recognizing 2.40. Guess what I'll do is update each time until I reach the latest update. Lol

Updating now from 5.1 to 5.8!

Thank you for the help! Greatly appreciated. So since this is updated, it should have no problems with compatibility with the Ryzen 9 3900x?

well im glad we got to the bottom of this

yes technically 3900 is from version 5.4 up

i would suggest 5.8

for the reasons of

you board is virtually the same as my taichi
im on 5.8 and its stable and fucntional

now one tip i must pass on

when i bought my 3800 i flashed bios to 5.8 using my 1700 cpu

all working fine
i then installed the 3800 and it wouldnt boot to bios

i finally got to thebottom of this by using JUST ONE ram stick in a2 slot
and it booted to bios , i could then switch off and insert 2nd stick in b2 and reboot set the xmp for ram etc

after this if i ever have to clear the cmos (reset bios )

i always have to use JUST ONE ram stick for the very first boot

i mention this as our boards are very very similar and you might have same issue
