Hi guys, I am completely stumped and not sure if it's me that has caused an issue with the MB, or if there is another problem causing the issue/s. I just got an X470 Taichi and I connected everything up outside of the Case on a little tech/test bench I have had for years. I went to power on the system and the CPU fan spun, but then I noticed I forgot to connect the 2 x 6-pin pcie connectors to the video card, and before I could turn it off by pressing the power button, the system/MB turned off itself, kinda like the power just cut out. Could I have damaged something by doing this? From what I read on Google, I shouldn't have damaged anything, but the MB won't post at all now. The LEDs light up on the MB when the PSU is turned on, but the CPU fan doesn't spin and nothing else happens when pressing the power button - it doesn't seem to even attempt to post. The debug LED also don't light up at all when pressing the power button. It did the first time I tried booting up the system, but not sure what the numbers were as I was too busy looking at the GPU without the pcie connectors plugged in :(. System specs are : X470 Taichi Ryzen 2700X 16GB (2x8GB sticks) G.Skill Ripjaws V 3200mhz CL16 GTX 460 (I use this for testing outside of the Case on a tech bench I have) PSU Corsair HX 650 (I also use this PSU for testing) 1 x SATA HDD 1 x Liteon Optical Drive I've taken out the CMOS battery and unplugged the power cord to the PSU and pressed the clear CMOS button, but that also doesn't seem to make a difference. Also, I have tried a different video card that doesn't require any PCIe connectors and still nothing happens. There is a couple of other things I am thinking could have caused an issue, but I'll wait to hear back from you guys first. What else do you guys think I should try? Different PSU? I don't have another CPU to test as I only have this single 2xxx series CPU (could be an issue with the CPU?) and I was only putting it in to update the BIOS so that I could add support for a 3xxx series CPU. |

not having the power to the video card shouldn't have caused any issues .. having components outside a case on a non-conductive surface shouldn't cause any issues either .. .. only thing is maybe static charge from you if you weren't properly grounded or at least touched some metal prior to handling components. You can try reconnecting power supply connectors to motherboard .. try just one stick of memory .. reseat video card .. pop battery out for 15 minutes (some have done it overnight) and pop back in and fire it up .. Are you using a screwdriver or similar to jump the power pins or are you using a switch? .. if a switch , then unplug and try manually jumping the power pins. Hi, thanks for the reply. I didn't think not plugging in those 2 x 6-pin PCIe connectors should have caused an issue. Good to know that you also agree. Also, I was touching the PSU when installing the components on the MB, so hopefully it had nothing to do with static charge. I've never killed a component with it before. I used to wear a wrist strap, but they're a bit annoying to work with, so I usually just touch the back of the PSU or a nearby Case with an already built system in it (would this be sufficient?). So far I have tried these things : 1. One stick of RAM in different slots as a single stick (have tried with both sticks) 2. Re-seated the video card and tried another one that doesn't need PCIe connectors. 3. I turned off the PSU, took out the CMOS battery, pressed the reset CMOS button on the back of the I/O panel. When I had the battery out, I left it out for about 2-3 hours before putting it back in and trying to power up the system. Do you think leaving it out overnight would make any difference if I already tried 3 hours? 4. I also unplugged both the SATA HDD and SATA Optical drive. That didn't make any difference, either. 5. I was using a switch for the power button that came with the tech bench, but I also tried unplugging the switch from the front panel header on the MB, and then used a flathead screwdriver between the two power pins and it didn't turn on that way, either. I guess that now leaves the PSU which I will try next and the CPU and MB. I am now thinking it's either the CPU or MB. Also, how do you power on/test a PSU without it being connected to anything? I know you can buy a PSU tester to test the voltage, but I just wanted to see if it powers on without it being connected to anything. I thought I read you can put a wire to two of the pins and fire it up that way? By the way, can you edit posts here? I couldn't seem to find that option. |

The CPU required dedicated 8 pin power connector, did you plug it in? Seeing you forgot about the GPU extra power cable needed, I'm guessing you might forgot the CPU 8 pin power also. Yes, I definitely plugged in the 8 pin CPU cable. That was the first cable I plugged in and then I plugged in the 24 pin MB connector. I tried a different PSU the other night and still no difference. I'll try that GPU in a different slot. I never thought about moving the GPU to a different slot, but even if that slot is faulty, wouldn't the MB still power on but have no video output? |

Disconnect everything from the board, pull the CPU (and check for any damage/bent pins) and then reassemble with only the 8pin/24pin power, GPU (and it's power connectors) 1 stick of RAM, display cable and nothing else connected (no KB/mouse or other USB devices). -------------

Hi, thanks for the reply. Alright, I'll try that in the next day or two when I have some time. As for the CPU, what do I do if there is bent pins on the CPU? What should I use to try and straighten them with? Also, if there is bent pins, wouldn't the CPU not have gone into the socket properly or can it still go in with bent pins and not function properly? As for damaged pins, what would be the difference between a damaged and bent pin? I'm new to AMD, have pretty much used Intel the past 15 years or so prior to this changeover to this system/platform. |

Sorry I guessed wrong. Thanks for the reply. The power connectors were plugged in fully as the CPU fans spun up the first time I turned it on. The MB worked for about 5-10 seconds before the power cut out. It hasn't worked/posted since that initial power on. |

I am pretty sure it's plugged in properly as when I first powered on the system, the CPU fan spun and it stayed on from anywhere between 5-10 seconds before the power cut out. It hasn't powered on since that initial try. I've plugged it in multiple times (both 24-pin and 8-pin) since that initial attempt to boot up the system. Also, if I can get a hold of a different CPU and it still doesn't post, is it then time to RMA the MB? And does anyone know where you RMA in Australia? Is there a service center here, or do I send overseas? This is the first time I've ever had/used/owned an Asrock MB. Hasn't been a good experience so far :(. No one answered when I asked this before, but can you edit posts here in this forum? I can't seem to find that option? |

https://event.asrock.com/tsd.asp You will need to open a support ticket with ASRock from the above link. ASRock tech support actually does check in here fairly often but the odds of them seeing your post are slim. You will have better luck opening a proper support ticket with them. As for the edit function, it is disabled on these forums due to abuse by spammers. They make seemingly legitimate posts then come back a few hours/days later and edit their post to insert spam and other malicious links. It made it almost impossible to find and delete them all. -------------

Hi, thanks for the reply and information about the edit function. Sorry that I didn't come on earlier to reply, but I didn't have any updates until the past couple of days. Anyway, I was able to get a hold of a cheap AM4 MB and I tried the CPU in that. It turns out the CPU is OK and is working great, and it appears that it is the X470 MB that is faulty. Every other part works fine, so I am going to have to try to RMA the MB. Do you happen to know if Asrock have a service center in Australia? If not, do I send it back to the place of purchase, or directly to Asrock overseas? |
