Subject: B550 ITX board won't boot with a my Ryzen 5600X.

Hi. I am testing my build out.

I bought my Board, a ASrock B550 Phantom Gaming ITX on September 5th in preparation for Zen 3. Got a 5600x at launch.

[Link to my build here](https://pcpartpicker.com/user/ravage123/saved/k3qk99). I don't have a 3080 yet and have been trying to get it to boot with a GTX 1070 and a RX 580.

At first I tried the Rx580, and the lights and fans would not turn on at all. Then I tried the GTX1070 and it seemed to turn on fine. Fans spun up, lights stayed on.

The Case/CPU/GPU fans, turn on, GPU/motherboard lights turn on. I've tried different display outputs, monitors, and 2 different GPUs, and its the same result. No display signal or POST screen.

Reseated the RAM and GPU as well.

I'm stumped.... Maybe my motherboard doesn't have a BIOS that supports Zen 3? No way to check since I don't have a Zen 2 CPU.

How can I check the currently installed BIOS without being able to boot? I know ASrock has the BIOS version written on a sticker somewhere but I am unable to find it on this board.

There should be a sticker on the chipset with the current bios number. https://www.asrock.com/support/index.us.asp?cat=FindBIOS

Your MB needs bios V1.60 for the ryzen 5 5600X. https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B550%20Phantom%20Gaming-ITXax/index.asp#CPU

That's a recent bios release, 11/4/2020, so your MB may not have it. https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B550%20Phantom%20Gaming-ITXax/index.asp#BIOS

Why is this? The BIOS page on the motherboard support site says that 5000 series is supported from v1.2 on August 25th!

That's absurd. And the patchnote for 1.6 says nothing at all about the 5000 series CPUs. It's not clear at all and I had assumed my CPU would work out of the box. I don't even have a old AMD CPU that will allow me to flash the new BIOS.

Yes, I see your point. It is confusing. So is there a sticker on your chipset that says what your current bios version is?

Nope, haven't been able to find anything.

No, can't find one

I do not know of any other way of checking the bios version except to boot into the BIOS/UEFI. Your MB probably has bios V1.00 or V1.10. Unfortunately you are going to need a ryzen series 3000 CPU to boot to the BIOS/UEFI to flash the bios.

I'm having the same issue as OP. Before buying the B550 mobo and 5600X, I verified that the mobo supports AsRock's USB "flashback" to update the BIOS and planned on doing that, but alas, can't update the BIOS without video output.

Interestingly, I also get no beeps with my installed mobo speaker, though I read on another thread that AsRock might disable chassis speakers by default, and that it has to be enabled in the BIOS?

For what it's worth, my Phantom Gaming B550 ITX (purchased in October from Newegg) has a "P1.00" sticker on the mobo side of the I/O shield, behind the WiFi antenna couplings. I haven't done my build yet but I'm in a similar situation. Was planning on buying a 5800 and I don't have another AM4 CPU handy, so I'm going to have to get creative if I want to execute that plan.

There is an Asrock forum on reddit that's very informative. https://www.reddit.com/r/ASRock/
I have seen a post on there where they were able to boot to the bios on this MB with a P1.10 bios, nothing about the P1.00 bios.

For you and others in the same boat, AMD has a Short-Term Processor Loan Boot Kit for free to flash your MB to a compatible ryzen series 5000 bios.

Thanks for the links. I independently found the short-term processor loan boot kit and that may be the way to go. This Reddit post says that Ryzen 7 5600 + P1.00 on a B550M PRO4 isn't working: https://www.reddit.com/r/ASRock/comments/jw9f2g/asrock_b550m_pro4_p11_is_bios_bootable/. That probably doesn't bode well for the PG B550 ITX/ax

On the other hand, this post seems to indicate that the B550M ITX ac would boot to BIOS with a Ryzen 5600 and BIOS 1.00: https://www.reddit.com/r/ASRock/comments/jwbnkb/psa_if_windows_install_isnt_working_on_your_new/. I may take my chances with 1.00 when I can get my hands on a 5800.

After extensive troubleshooting (following all the steps at https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/no-post-system-wont-boot-and-no-video-output-troubleshooting-checklist.1285536/) I still haven't been able to boot, POST, or get any video output (or mobo speaker beeps). I have P1.10. ASRock said I can RMA my board, or I can get the short term loaner CPU from AMD. I'm awaiting a confirmation from AMD on the loaner boot kit and intend to do that first so I don't have to risk shipping any parts to the manufacturer (and would have to pay for the shipping in the process). A little nervous that other people seem to have had success with POSTing from P1.00 and 1.10 while I haven't, though maybe it varies by motherboard model in addition to BIOS version?

Made an account to let you know that AMD might be able to help you with this:

Same result with my B550 Phantom Gaming ITX w/P1.00 BIOS (probably) and a Ryzen 5800X: no POST. My Sapphire Pulse 5600XT lights up as expected but I don't get any video output. No beep codes, either. I've requested the AMD boot kit, we'll see how long it takes for that to arrive.

A little more fiddling/reseating got me to 5 short beeps, which is Processor Error, as best I can tell. Still seems consistent with the B500 Phantom Gaming ITX/ax with P1.00 BIOS not working with the Ryzen 5800X.

I don't have my cooler yet and the CPU gets very warm in a few seconds after applying power, so I think I'm going to stop until I can get a 3000 series processor to update the BIOS.

For reference, it took about 4 business days for AMD to approve my request for a loaner CPU. It shipped today and should arrive within 5 business days. I don't have a tracking number. So if you need to go this route, budget two weeks for the whole process.

Good news: my loaner Ryzen 3100 from AMD arrived today, and I was able to use that to get into the BIOS and start the update process. So I think that demonstrates conclusively that P1.00 BIOS is not compatible with Zen 3 on this board.

Bad news: they system quit abruptly about 20% of the way into the P1.71 BIOS update. I admit I didn't install the CPU cooler that came with the loaner, because I thought I could get away with running it for a couple minutes without a heat sink to do the BIOS update. Apparently I was wrong. So now I get to RMA my motherboard to ASRock so they can rescue it. Sad trombone, but kudos to ASRock support for replying to me after hours tonight to get me started in the RMA process.

@Lumpybed
Why would anyone even try to boot up a computer without a heat sink on the CPU and then flash the bios??
The CPU probably reached its thermal barrier within seconds and shut down your computer. I'm surprised that Asrock would even let you RMA the MB. Your CPU may also be toast.

I was having the same problem. Same specs as you. asrock b550, just got a ryzen 5 5600x, I couldn't get the board to post in order for the instant flash. After really regretting buying it (I got suckered in to buying a combo deal off newegg as it was the only option to get the ryzen in stock), I took it all a part, read every page of the m/b manual (even considered reading the parts in foreign languages to not miss anything) and voila, I somehow managed to get it to post. I checked the bios version and it was 1.2, so I quickly downloaded the latest version for me (1.7) and ran the instant flash. As of right now everything is working.

Mine would not boot, disassembled, Motherboard on table, reassembled, then it worked. Reinstalled in case, no issues. Makes no sense.
