Hi,

I have a strange problem with this board. First time I see this in 20-30 years.

First, the boot order. If the first device is unavailable / not working, it doesn't boot with the second device automatically. It stays there showing a flashing underscore.

Second: It won't boot on the DVD unless I go to the BIOS and change SATA mode from AHCI to IDE.

Third: It boots on some DVDs only. With some I only get the flashing underscore (i.e. Knoppix 8.x live DVDs), with others, it boots just fine (e.g. gparted live DVD from 2013). All my DVDs boot just fine in every of my 4 other computers.

Booting from USB is OK.

Booting from HD/SSD is OK iif SATA mode is set to AHCI.

Lastly, Since it never boots from the second device when first fails, it seems to remember which last device I've chosen in the F11 boot menu and doesn't boot anymore from the HDD/SDD when the DVD is removed. I have to reselect it from F2/F11. In other words the Boot order in the BIOS changes constantly.

Can someone help me see through this. It's highly an unexpected behavior. I had computers since 2006 and never had such a strange issue.

Try replacing the CMOS battery, a dying/dead battery can cause all kinds of
corruption in the BIOS. Make sure you clear CMOS when you replace the battery too,
just to be sure any and all corruption is cleared. I tend to leave the clear CMOS
jumper set to clear and have the system disconnected from power when changing the
battery then put the jumper back to default and reconnect power after the new battery
is in.

It may also be responsible for the other issues I see you have posted about.

Thanks,

It's the first thing I did before putting this bord in its case, putting a new battery, checked for 3V output.

I had to change the PSU too. The original one had a 4 pin 12V supply rated 23A and the power was turning itself off while in BIOS. Strangely, the new PSU which has an 8 pins 12V supply is rated at 20A and does the trick.

Solved.

A strange setting in the BIOS: 'SATA IDE Combined mode' enabled and moved the SATA cable for the DVD from SATA port 2 to SATA port >= 5
