I hope this is the correct place for this post. I currently have a H97M Pro4 board with an intel i-3 processor. The book says that the board supports 4th and 5th generation i3,5 and 7 cpu's. Is this board restricted to just 4th and 5th generations or can I upgrade to a newer generation?

Thank yo

No, the board does not support newer generations than 5th. The best CPU you can
put in that board would be an i7 4790/k. There are 5th gen i7s too but they are
very difficult to find and are actually slower than the 4790/k. Given that your
board is an H97 based board, save some money and get a non-K variant as you will
not be able to overclock anyway.

Make sure you buy used, it will save you a lot of money. The price is usually
between $150 and $200 for an i7 4790k on ebay, less if you look for auctions
without a buy it now option but you need to get lucky.
